The Federal Ministry for Health and Women (abbreviated BMGF ; abbreviated: Ministry of Health ) designated the Austrian ministry , which is primarily responsible for the health system . From 2009 to June 30, 2016, the women's and gender equality agendas were located in the Ministry of Education, during which time the ministry was known as the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG). The Federal Ministry of Health was formed in 2008 from the Federal Ministry of Health, Family and Youth .

The Austrian Ministry of Health was founded in 1918, during the First World War , in the last months of Imperial Austria (Cisleithanien) , as the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Public Health , the first such ministry in Europe. It was built from August 1917 by the doctor Johann (Ivan) Horbaczewski . In November 1918 it became part of the State Office for Social Welfare in German Austria , in which it became a department. This was continued from April 1919 under the direction of Julius Tandler until November 10, 1920 as the State Office for Public Health ; on this day the federal constitution came into force, in which ministries were again spoken of instead of state offices. As a result, the Ministry of Social Affairs was mostly responsible for the health department. In 1972 a separate health ministry was established again. From 1987 to 1990 health matters were handled by a Federal Minister in the Federal Chancellery , after which it was until 1997 the Ministry of Health and Consumer Protection . After further combinations of competencies in later years, there was a federal ministry exclusively for health matters from 2008 to 2016 for the first time since 1918. Since January 2018, the agendas have been managed again in the Ministry of Social Affairs (since 2020 Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection ).
