Mario Kunasek (born June 29, 1976 in Graz , Styria ) is an Austrian politician ( FPÖ ) and former soldier . From December 2017 to May 22, 2019 he was Federal Minister for National Defense of the Republic of Austria .

From October 2008 to June 2015 he was a member of the Austrian National Council and from June 2015 to December 2017 a member of the Styrian Landtag . Since 2015 he has been regional party chairman of the FPÖ Styria . Since May 28, 2019, he has been a member of the Styrian state parliament again, where he acts as FPÖ club chairman.

education and profession

After attending compulsory school, Mario Kunasek learned to be a car technician. After military service in 1995, which he performed in St. Michael, he completed his training as a non-commissioned officer in Enns and Vienna. Between 1997 and 2005 he was a non-commissioned officer in supply regiment 1 in Graz. From 2005 he was a staff sergeant .

Political career

Mario Kunasek began his political career in the Ring Freedom Youth (RFJ). Since 2005 he has been on the regional party executive of the FPÖ Styria and local party chairman of the FPÖ in his home municipality Gössendorf , which was also a member of the municipal executive from 2010 to 2015. After the municipal council elections in 2015, he was deputy mayor there until December 2017. At the state party conference in 2007 he was elected state party secretary of the FPÖ Styria and has been active in the state party presidency ever since. From April 2007 to February 2019 Mario Kunasek was district party chairman of the FPÖ Graz area .

In the National Council election on September 28, 2008 , he ran as the top candidate of the FPÖ in constituency 6B Steiermark Mitte (Graz Umgebung and Voitsberg) and made it into parliament for the first time . In the 2013 National Council election , Kunasek was the top candidate of the FPÖ-Styria and was once again a member of the National Council through a basic mandate in the regional constituency of Graz and the surrounding area . There he acted as chairman of the national defense committee and was defense spokesman for the Freedom Parliamentary Club.

After the state elections in Styria in 2015 , in which Kunasek led his party as the FPÖ top candidate and celebrated the state party's best result to date with 26.76%, he was sworn in as a member of the state parliament of Styria on June 16, 2015. At the same time, he resigned as a member of the National Council. In the Styrian Landtag, Mario Kunasek was the chairman of the Freedom Landtag Club until December 2017. On December 18, 2017, Mario Kunasek took over the defense minister's agenda at a festive ceremony in the Federal Ministry of National Defense.

In July 2018 he stated in an interview that he wanted to run as the FPÖ's top candidate in the state elections in Styria in 2019 and that he would move to Styria if the party moved into the state government.

Private

In June 2018 he married his partner Sabrina Koroschetz in Leibnitz , best man was the then Styrian FPÖ club chairman Stefan Hermann .
