Herbert Scheibner (born April 23, 1963 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( BZÖ , formerly FPÖ ).

Life

origin

Scheibner attended a natural science high school and did military service in the armed forces ; He is staff sergeant of the militia at the Jägerbataillon Wien 2 . He studied business administration at the Vienna University of Economics and Law and law at the University of Vienna . He then worked in the banking and insurance sector.

Political career

In 1988/99 he was a training officer and office manager in the General Secretariat of the FPÖ. From 1989 to 1993 he was federal chairman of the Ring of Freedom Youth (RFJ). From 1992 to 1995 he was Secretary General of the FPÖ . From 1994 to 1999 he was managing director of the Freedom Academy. After that he was a member of the federal party executive of the FPÖ until 2005.

As the successor to Ewald Stadler , he became club chairman of the FPÖ in the National Council at the beginning of 1999 and initially held this office at the beginning of the subsequent legislative period. With the inauguration of the black-blue coalition on February 4, 2000, he became Minister of Defense in the Schüssel I cabinet . Since the office of defense minister in the Schüssel II cabinet fell to the ÖVP , Scheibner was again active as club chairman of the FPÖ from February 2003. When Bündnis Zukunft Österreich (BZÖ) split off from the FPÖ in April 2005 , he headed the “Freedom Parliamentary Club” until the 2006 National Council election, in which the majority consisted of MPs who, like Scheibner, had converted from the FPÖ to the BZÖ. He was also deputy chairman of the parliamentary club (parliamentary group) of the BZÖ.

From 1995 to 2000 he was a member of the Austrian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe . He was also a delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Western European Union and to the North Atlantic Assembly .

After the resignation of the designated party leader Stefan Petzner on November 19, 2008, he took over the business of the party leader on an interim basis.

On September 14, 2011, the Vienna Public Prosecutor applied for the immunity of the member of the National Council to be lifted after a bank associated with the Raiffeisen group suspected money laundering . The Scheibner-owned bank accounts are said to have received amounts of at least 400,000 euros from various armaments-related companies. On September 21, the National Council lifted Scheibner's political immunity . According to information from the Vienna Regional Court and the public prosecutor's office from November 2012, “there is neither a criminal complaint nor an indictment”.

Private

Scheibner is married and has two legitimate children. He has been in a relationship with the Czech model Iveta Portelová since 2007 and has had another child since March 11, 2011. Scheibner has been Vice President of the non-partisan Austrian Society for Foreign Policy and the United Nations (ÖGAVN) since 2008 .
