Walter Rosenkranz (born July 29, 1962 in Krems an der Donau ) is an Austrian lawyer and politician ( FPÖ ). From October 2008 to June 2019 he was a member of the National Council and from 2017 to May 2019 club chairman of the FPÖ. In addition, from 2013 to 2019 he was regional party chairman of the FPÖ Lower Austria . On 1 July 2019 he was Federal President of barking Alexander Van as ombudsman sworn in .

education and profession

Walter Rosenkranz completed elementary school and the federal high school in Krems. Between 1978 and 1980 Rosenkranz trained as a music school teacher for Lower Austria music schools. He then attended the University of Music and Performing Arts from 1980 to 1982 (now the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna ) and studied law at the University of Vienna from 1980 to 1989 ( Dr. iur. ). After completing his studies, he did his military service .

Between 1991 and 1992 Rosenkranz worked as a contract employee in the Federal Ministry for National Defense . He then worked for two years as a lawyer for the FPÖ State Parliament Club in Vienna and in 1994 he was State Party Secretary of the FPÖ Vienna. From 1995 to 2000 he was a trainee lawyer. Walter Rosenkranz has been a criminal defense lawyer since 2000 .

He is married to Susanne Rosenkranz , who also works as an FPÖ local politician in Krems. In the local council elections in Krems in 2017 , she was the FPÖ top candidate.

Political career

From 1988 to 2017 he was a local councilor in the statutory city of Krems an der Donau, and in 1988 and 1989 he was also federal chairman of the Freedom Student Initiative. In the National Council election in 2008 , he led the Lower Austrian candidate list of the FPÖ. Since then, Rosenkranz has been a member of the National Council.

On June 9, 2013, he was elected regional party chairman with 65 percent of the votes at an extraordinary regional party conference of the Lower Austrian FPÖ, succeeding Barbara Rosenkranz (with whom he is not related or by marriage). At the 34th state party conference of the FPÖ Lower Austria in June 2018, he was confirmed as state party chairman with 68.22 percent of the delegate votes. In 2015 he was elected with around 89 percent.

From 2013 to 2017 he was chairman of the parliamentary teaching committee, from 2017 he was club chairman of the FPÖ . On May 27, 2019, Norbert Hofer was elected as club chairman and Herbert Kickl as executive club chairman, Walter Rosenkranz was nominated as FPÖ candidate for the office of ombudsman . On June 6, 2019, he was proposed as the successor to Peter Fichtenbauer for the term of office beginning on July 1, 2019 and lasting until June 30, 2025, by the Main Committee of the National Council as Ombudsman and elected by the National Council on June 13, 2019. Alois Kainz took over his seat on the National Council . Udo Landbauer succeeded him as Lower Austrian FPÖ regional party leader .

He is a member of the German national fraternity Libertas . Since 2003 Rosenkranz has also been a member of the Krems Voluntary Fire Brigade , where he works as a fire brigade lawyer.
