Political activity

Udo Landbauer came to the Ring Freiheitlicher Jugend (RFJ) Niederösterreich at the age of 14 , of which he was a member of the provincial board from 2003. From 2005 - in the same year he became a member of the regional party board of the FPÖ Lower Austria - until 2010, Landbauer was regional chairman of the RFJ Lower Austria, and in 2010 he was appointed honorary chairman. From 2006 until his election as executive federal chairman in 2011, he was general secretary of the RFJ Austria. On the 25th Ordinary Federal Youth Day of the RFJ Austria in Tulln an der Donau in March 2012, he was elected federal chairman with 98.7 percent of the delegate votes, thus also a member of the FPÖ federal party executive, and after the three-year term of office on May 9, 2015 during the 26th . confirmed in this function at the Ordinary Federal Youth Day. In January 2018 he was followed by Maximilian Krauss as RFJ Chairman. From 2009 he was also district party chairman of the FPÖ Wiener Neustadt.

In 2010, Landbauer supported the organization “Young Patriots - Association for Education for Political Responsibility”, a right-wing extremist group with a “völkisch-fundamentalist orientation” according to information from the DÖW , which published the magazine gegenARGUMENTe (the magazine that the DÖW according to which it is clearly to be classified in the “folk-traditionalist form of Austrian right-wing extremism”, has since been published by Aula-Verlag ). In two letters with his likeness to sympathizers of the “Young Patriots”, Landbauer solicited donations (to “counteract the destructive zeitgeist and, above all, to familiarize young people with their roots”), including for a song book published by the group in 2010 for on the go , which, among other things , contained a Christmas carol propagated in the time of National Socialism with High Night of the Clear Stars , with And Wenn wir marschieren the Bundlied des Bund Deutscher Mädel (BDM) and the racist Negro uprising in Cuba . According to the preface addressed to the “dear comrade” and “dear comrade”, the songbook was intended to “awaken and re-bind forces of the soul in the service of our people and in loyalty to our fatherland”.

Landbauer received his first political mandate as FPÖ candidate after the municipal council election in Wiener Neustadt on March 14, 2010 with the position of a city council (department: transport and foundations) in the city senate. From 2011 to 2014 he worked in the “Club of the Viennese Freedom Members of the State Parliament and City Councils” as a political advisor to the club chairman. After the state election in Lower Austria in 2013 he became a deputy of the Freedom Party in the state parliament of Lower Austria (member of the Committees on Education, Europe, social and cultural) and moved to Wiener Neustadt from the city senate in the council , where he from 2015 chairman of the liberal municipal council clubs was . On July 21, 2017, Udo Landbauer was elected chairman of the free district organizations of Wiener Neustadt (City) and Wiener Neustadt Land , which have been working together under one roof since then, with 94 percent of the votes .

Top candidate in the state elections in Lower Austria in 2018

In the state elections in Lower Austria in 2018 , he ran as the FPÖ's top candidate. In a press release in November 2017 during the election campaign, he referred to the governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner ( ÖVP ) as “ Muslim- Mama-Mikl,” because the Lower Austrian educational plan for kindergartens stipulates that “celebrations and holidays from different cultures” have to be celebrated Farmer viewed as “forced Islamization ”. A father complained to him that his son was learning to count in Turkish. In another kindergarten, an employee is supposed to wear a niqab . In the further course of the press release, however, there is talk of an “Islamic headscarf” - an item of clothing that should be “forbidden once and for all”. According to Landbauer, the population is “forced to be happy by the Mikl-ÖVP with this multi-cultural madness”.

Five days before the state elections, on January 23, 2018, the Viennese weekly newspaper Falter reported on the third edition of the 1997 edition of the Germania fraternity's songbook in Wiener Neustadt , which also contains a number of anti-Semitic , racist and suspected song texts under the Prohibition Act are included. Landbauer was a member of the pennal fraternity from 2001 until shortly before the Lower Austrian state election in January 2018 and was its deputy chairman until January 19, 2018. As a result of reporting in other domestic and foreign media, he initially put his membership "dormant", was "shocked" by these texts, which he described as "disgusting", and declared that they had never been seen in the songbook, never sung never to have noticed xenophobia or anti-Semitism in the fraternity. Shortly before the state election, he resigned his membership; In a ZiB 2 interview with Armin Wolf on January 24, 2018, he stated: "I am not a member of the fraternity."

Governor Mikl-Leitner initially described the allegations as "difficult" and "to be taken very seriously", expecting "not only clarification, but also clear distancing". Landbauer rejected calls for resignation from the SPÖ , NEOS , the Greens and the IKG , and was also supported by his party. Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) called for “those responsible for the anti-Semitic and racist songbooks to be fully harsh of the law”, but did not address farmers. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen judged the texts after they became known as “despicable” and stated that the members of Germania were “now under suspicion of being re-used. Whoever is responsible for it has no place in politics. ”A few days later he called on farmers to resign, if he did not resign,“ then the FPÖ has a problem ”. For him, the limit of what is politically acceptable lies before a criminal conviction. On January 27th, Mikl-Leitner declared that he wanted to work with all parties after the election on the 28th, but has now ruled out a collaboration with Landbauer.

In the state elections, the FPÖ fell short of the survey results (around 20 percent) and the election target stated by Landbauer of at least doubling the share of the vote in order to oust the SPÖ from second place, but it was able to achieve an increase of 8.21 percentage points The 2013 state election to 14.76 percent of the vote doubled the number of their mandates from four to eight of the 53 seats in the state parliament of Lower Austria . Mikl-Leitner affirmed on the evening of the election: “There is no cooperation with Udo Landbauer in the provincial government”, but due to the composition of the Lower Austrian provincial government it has a proportional system, in which the FPÖ is now entitled to one member of the government and also to decide who it is posted, limited opportunities.

On February 1, 2018, Landbauer resigned all political functions and suspended his membership in the FPÖ. He did not accept his mandate in the state parliament and resigned as a city councilor in Wiener Neustadt.

On February 5, 2018, according to a report by ORF Niederösterreich , Landbauer was interrogated as a witness by the public prosecutor's office in Wiener Neustadt, along with others, such as the Viennese state parliament member Stefan Berger ( FPÖ ), who is also said to have been a member of the Germania fraternity. Four suspects had previously been questioned.

On 6 February 2018 it was announced that the Freedom Party - politician Philipp Gerstenmayer Udo Landbauer as an alderman in Wiener Neustadt will succeed. On February 20, 2017, he was elected to the Wiener Neustädter City Council and thus to the successor to Udo Landbauer. Michael Schnedlitz followed him in the state parliament .

In May 2018 said Freedom Party - Secretary Christian Hafenecker , he was open to a political comeback Country maker. At the regional party conference of the FPÖ Lower Austria , Landbauer himself emphasized that he would continue to be politically active if the opportunity arises. The Lower Austrian FPÖ regional party chairman and FPÖ club chairman in the National Council , Walter Rosenkranz , is in favor of the farmer's return, possibly as club chairman in the Lower Austrian state parliament , as he emphasized in an interview with ORF Lower Austria .

On August 24, 2018, the public prosecutor in Wiener Neustadt closed the investigation into the songbook affair against the fraternity Germania zu Wiener Neustadt . Landbauer was brought as a witness in the proceedings. On August 25, 2018, FPÖ boss and Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache announced that he was in favor of a farmer's return. ÖVP and SPÖ were against it, as their federal managing directors and general secretary ( Max Lercher and Karl Nehammer ) emphasized. In a video message Michael Schnedlitz , who had taken up the state parliament mandate for farmers , announced that he would immediately give up his mandate in favor of farmers and that he would like the farmer to return as soon as possible.

On August 28, 2018, it was announced that Udo Landbauer would return to politics as a member of the regional parliament and executive club chairman of the FPÖ in the Lower Austrian state parliament on September 20, 2018, taking over the mandate from Michael Schnedlitz, while FPÖ club chairman Martin Huber remained in office. This new regulation was sharply criticized by the Lower Austrian Greens , in particular their state spokeswoman Helga Krismer .

On September 19, 2018, Udo Landbauer was elected by the state party executive , alongside state party chairman Walter Rosenkranz , as the state party chairman of the FPÖ Lower Austria . New provincial party secretary was the former Wiener Neustadt FPÖ community leaders, parliamentary deputies and Landbauer confidant Michael Schnedlitz which in turn Christian Hafenecker succeeded in office, who moved in as Freedom Party General Secretary in the Federal Party. On September 20, 2018, he was elected by the Lower Austrian state parliament , alongside club chairman Martin Huber , as the executive club chairman of his party - in part under violent protests from other parties and organizations.

On July 1, 2019, he also became regional party chairman of the FPÖ Lower Austria . He succeeded Walter Rosenkranz , who became an ombudsman at the federal level . After Martin Huber's suspension from the party, Landbauer became club chairman of the Lower Austrian FPÖ in October 2019.
