Maximilian Krauss (politician)

Maximilian Krauss (born February 8, 1993 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( FPÖ ). Krauss was a member of the Austrian National Council from November 9, 2017 to December 18, 2017 . From November 2015 to November 2017 he was a member of the Vienna State Parliament and a member of the Vienna City Council . Krauss has been chairman of the Ring Freedom Youth Austria since January 2018 . Since January 25, 2018, he has been the successor of Anton Mahdalik as a non-executive city councilor in the Vienna state government.

Life

Krauss grew up as the eldest of three siblings near the Esterházypark in Vienna's 6th district of Mariahilf . His parents are staunch social democrats . After attending compulsory schools , he passed the Matura in 2011 . He then began studying law at the University of Vienna .

Krauss got in touch with the FPÖ through Heinz-Christian Strache , whom he has known since he was 13. In the municipal district of Josefstadt he was elected district chairman of the Ring Freedom Youth (RFJ), and only one year later, in 2007, he was elected to the regional executive committee of the RFJ Vienna. From 2009 to 2012 he was deputy regional chairman of the RFJ Vienna. Since 2012 he has been the managing chairman of Vienna. He has also been Deputy Federal Chairman since 2009.

After Krauss was a member of the district leadership of the FPÖ Josefstadt from 2010 to 2012, he was elected district party chairman in 2012, at the age of only 19. He is the youngest district party leader in Austria. In the 2013 National Council election , he ran at number 11 on the state list, but failed to make it into parliament. Before his election to the Vienna State Parliament and City Council in October 2015, he was an advisor to the liberal Viennese club chairman Johann Gudenus . Professionally, he has been the managing director and secretary of the Freedom Academy Vienna since May 2016.

In the 2017 National Council election , Krauss was able to enter the Austrian National Council via the FPÖ's federal list. He was sworn in as a member of the National Council in the constituent session of the National Council of the 26th legislative period on November 9, 2017 and switched back to state politics on December 18, 2017. Since January 25, 2018, as the successor to Anton Mahdalik, he has not been the executive city councilor of the state government and city senate of Häupl VI .

Krauss is a member of the Aldania academic fraternity in Vienna .

Controversy

Krauss became known nationwide in July 2014, when the FPÖ nominated the 21-year-old as deputy city school council president for Vienna. As the second strongest force in the Vienna City Council and Parliament , the Freedom Party was entitled to make nominations. In the past, Krauss has always stood out for his extreme views. This is how he called the Mayor of Vienna Michael Häupl Mayor of the Turks , called for German to be the language for breaks in schools and demanded that child molesters be chemically castrated in our country too. Häupl then rejected Krauss for the office of Vice-City School Council President. In autumn 2014, Krauss applied to the anti-discrimination office for an arbitration procedure and hoped for a sum of 12,459 euros for lost earnings that he wanted to donate to a youth project. The FPÖ also brought a complaint against Häupl for abuse of office; however, the investigation by the public prosecutor's office was closed in March 2015 with reference to the mayor's right not to appoint certain candidates. A simultaneous application for a legal review of the Vienna School Act at the Constitutional Court was rejected, as the right to propose is not a right, but a power. In December 2015, Bernd Saurer was appointed Deputy City School Council President for Vienna.

He attracted attention beyond the borders of Austria with his demand that school canteens should not take into account the concerns of schoolchildren who, as Muslims or Jews, are not allowed to eat pork for religious reasons. He posted the statement “Every child should be able to enjoy a schnitzel” on Facebook next to the picture of a freshly baked schnitzel with side dishes. The fact that he had inadvertently used a photo from a stock photography provider which, according to the photographer, represented a “fried fish fillet, french fries with vegetables” caused amusement on the Internet. According to information from an online journalist, the photo used on the Facebook graphic was almost certainly obtained from the image platform pngimg.com. There it can be found under the search term "Schnitzel".
