Stock photography is a field of photography in which images are produced in stock ("to have in stock"). The opposite of stock photography is therefore commissioned photography .

The pre-produced recordings are mostly distributed and sold through picture agencies .

There are usually two ways in which stock photographs are sold:

  • as a royalty-free image ("RF", "royalty free", "royalty free")
  • as a licensed image ("RM", "rights managed", "licensed")

In the case of a license-free recording, the price is usually only set according to the size of the image and the customer can then use the image indefinitely, sometimes with restrictions.

Effects of non-license-compliant use

When using stock platforms, it should be noted that the regulations in the license agreement must always be observed, even in the case of license-free images. For example, some stock photos are only released for editorial use, but not for commercial use. If you disregard the regulations in the license agreement and fail to name the copyright holder, for example, you expose yourself to injunctive relief and risk receiving a warning . You also make yourself liable for damages .
