In contrast to the general education, the compulsory vocational school (vocational school) is not compulsory for the fulfillment of the teaching obligation , but the school attendance requirement in the teaching profession within the framework of the dual vocational training / training.
School types of general compulsory schools
- Primary school (VS, elementary school; 1st to 4th grade , normal age 6th to 9th year , ISCED 1; special forms also with elementary school and upper grade 1st to 8th grade)
- Hauptschule (HS, 5th to 8th grade, 10th to 14th year of age, ISCED 2)
- New middle school (NMS, model tests of the substitute form for the HS with AHS curriculum, 5th to 8th grade, 10th to 14th year of age, ISCED 2)
- Polytechnic school (PS / PTS, 9th grade, 14-15 years of age, ISCED 3C)
- Special school (SS, grade 1–9, age 6–15, ISCED 1–3)

- Entry into a lower level of the general secondary school (AHS)
- Visiting a statute school , so a school with its own curriculum (public or private)
- Integration of pupils with special educational needs in a compulsory school or lower level AHS
A model experiment of the younger years is the cooperative middle school (KMS), not a school type, but a school type of a HS and / or AHS lower level.
Compulsory schools and compulsory education
Education is compulsory for every child who stays in Austria permanently, i.e. for longer than one semester (one assessment period), regardless of their citizenship : In Austria there is no compulsory education; Children can also be taught at home or privately, individually or in organized groups . However, these types of lessons must meet the legal requirements of the educational goals of compulsory schools. Austrian children who are abroad are also subject to compulsory education. This can be done by attending an Austrian school abroad (school with an Austrian curriculum) or by attending a foreign school and also in home / private lessons.
As a rule, lessons are compulsory from 6 to 15 years of age. Attendance at compulsory schools must take place during this time. Is in Einschulalter a lack of school readiness detected (on the part of school authorities ) is to visit a nursery (or pre-school along with the other school levels if there is no separate preschool, elementary I) obligatory ( preschool fee ) . The pre-school year is counted towards fulfilling the statutory compulsory education if the 9th year of school in compulsory school or AHS is successfully completed. If a child enters compulsory school before the age of 6 (completion on March 1st of the coming calendar year), this is referred to as early admission . Early school attendance is included in the duration of general compulsory schooling. If, during the first year of school, it turns out that there is a lack of school readiness, the child can be deregistered (on the part of the school principal or the parents) or the year can be counted as pre-school. There are various school trials at compulsory schools in both cases .
The choice in the intermediate level from the age of 10/4. School level between compulsory school and lower level AHS (secondary education) only applies to the legal guardian , unless otherwise required. In the 1st semester of the 4th grade, however, a verifiable recommendation is made by the school.
From the day following the completion of the 15th year of life before the start of the summer vacation, there is no longer any obligation to teach.

Compulsory schooling in a European comparison
A compulsory school leaving certificate without a further qualification is considered to be a low qualification , i.e. a drop-out rate from the educational system - in terms of educational statistics, it does not record internal training ( on-the-job training ) or self-employed persons who are qualified in the job description .
