The Cooperative Middle School ( KMS ) is an expiring school trial of the middle school in Austria . It will be replaced by the New Middle School in the coming years .

Concern and curriculum

This type of school is offered to 10 to 14 year olds. The KMS does not replace one of the two existing school types ( AHS and Hauptschule ), but is, as the name suggests, a cooperation between the two. AHS and compulsory school teachers teach together at KMSs (plural KMS ). The curriculum of the AHS lower level applies. It can be implemented by a HS, AHS, or two schools together as a school experiment or an autonomy project .

The cooperative middle school is also not a comprehensive school . The aim of this type of school is to break up the traditional division in Austria into a middle and a higher education path by interweaving the two systems. At the same time, aspects of general education are more closely combined with those of vocational preparation . The students should receive basic general knowledge within four years and also be prepared for later professional life or for the subsequent secondary school (middle or higher school).

From the third grade (7th grade), targeted career and school career orientation is offered through the following subjects:

  • Career orientation (BO)
  • Housekeeping (EH or HWS)

The students are divided into three performance groups (similar to those in the Hauptschule). The first performance group is comparable to an AHS lower level. Each KMS has the option of choosing the focus according to which the curriculum is then designed.

Discussion and reference to the New Middle School (NMS)

The KMS, which can actually be described as a test model , as well as the idea of merging the Hauptschule and AHS (the comprehensive school for all 10 to 14 year olds) is always on the agenda of political discussions in Austria. Among other things, it will be discussed how effective the concept itself is and whether the KMS can really replace a standardized secondary school.

Most of the CMS are currently in Vienna. However, since the Hauptschule will be transferred to the New Middle School by 2015/16 , the KMS classes are increasingly being replaced.
