Roman Haider

Roman Haider (born April 13, 1967 in Grieskirchen ) is an Austrian politician ( FPÖ ) and management consultant. From 2008 to 2019 he was a member of the Austrian National Council and has been a member of the European Parliament since July 2, 2019 .

Life

After elementary school, Haider attended the academic high school in Linz Spittelwiesen and then switched to the federal upper level secondary school in Linz blossom street. After graduating from high school in 1986, he studied business administration at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and graduated in 1997 with the academic degree Mag. Rer.soc.oec. from. Haider did his military service in 1993 and 1994 and completed a communication trainer training from 1989 to 1990. He has been working as a communication trainer since 1990 and became managing director in the field of management consulting and market and opinion research in 1997. He has also been a management consultant since 2000. Roman Haider is not related to the deceased FPÖ and BZÖ politician and governor of Carinthia, Jörg Haider .

Haider is married and has three children.

From 1990 to 1997 Haider was regional chairman of the Ring Freiheitlicher Jugend (RFJ) in Upper Austria and from 1990 to 1993 a member of the regional party board of the FPÖ Upper Austria. Between 1995 and 1997 he was federal chairman of the RFJ Austria. Haider was also involved in local politics. He has been a local councilor in Aschach an der Donau since 1991 and was elected to the local council in 1993 as well as the local party chairman of the FPÖ Aschach. In 2005 he took over the function of state finance officer and in 2006 became state training officer and delegate to the economic parliament of the Chamber of Commerce of the FPÖ Upper Austria. In the National Council election in 2008 , Haider won a mandate on the FPÖ regional list of Upper Austria and was sworn in as a member of parliament on October 28, 2008. He was the area spokesman for tourism in the FPÖ parliamentary club . However, he named the areas of economy, budget and finance as the main focus of his parliamentary activities.

In March 2017, Haider intervened by telephone because of what he thought was an inappropriate link between the FPÖ and fraternities at an ongoing lecture event at his son's school. The event was then canceled by the school management. This incident sparked public discussion. According to the Upper Austrian Provincial School Board, the termination was not permitted.

Haider is a member and vice chairman of the Pennale fraternity p.cB! Donauhort zu Aschach , a "weapons student corporation" founded in 1998. He is a founding member and chairman of the Association for the Protection of Austrian Tavern Culture , which is particularly active in opposing a smoking ban (see non-smoker protection ) in catering establishments. In the National Council he spoke out against an absolute ban on smoking in restaurants, which he described as "state socialist tutelage". He is the treasurer of the Austrian-Albanian Society .

In the European elections in Austria in 2019 , he ran for the FPÖ in fourth place on the list. After Heinz-Christian Strache and Petra Steger waived their mandate , he moved into the European Parliament as an Austrian member of the European Parliament at the constituent session of the 9th European Parliament on July 2, 2019 . Sandra Wohlschlager took over his seat on the National Council .
