Karl Wilfing (born September 26, 1960 in Mistelbach ) is an Austrian federal civil servant , politician ( ÖVP ) and President of the Lower Austrian Parliament since March 22, 2018 .

Wilfing was mayor of his hometown Poysdorf from 2000 to 2011 . From 2011 to 2018 he was a provincial councilor in the Lower Austrian provincial government and since March 22, 2018 he has been president of the state parliament .

Karl Wilfing was born as the son of the politician Karl Wilfing sen. born. After elementary school in 1970, he switched to a general high school in Hollabrunn or Laa an der Thaya and passed his Matura in 1979. He then did his military service in 1980, studied law at the University of Vienna from 1980 to 1981 and then graduated from 1981 to 1986 with a degree in political science and journalism at the University of Vienna, which he obtained with the academic degree Mag. Phil. completed. In 1987 he joined the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Youth and Family, where he was promoted to head of department in 1989. In 1994 he became a group leader. He has been exempt from the ministry since 2000. He is married and has three children.

After his election to the Poysdorf municipal council in 1985, Wilfing held the position of provincial chairman of the young ÖVP Lower Austria between 1986 and 1995. He was elected to the city council in 1990, was district party chairman of ÖVP Poysdorf from 1993 and in 1995 took over the office of district chairman of ÖAAB Mistelbach. Since 1995 Wilfing has held the office of chairman of the "Europaregion Weinviertel" association, and in 2000 he was elected mayor and ÖVP district party chairman.

Wilfing represented the ÖVP from March 28, 1996 to February 23, 2000 in the Federal Council and had been a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament since February 24, 2000 . Karl Wilfing was chairman of the transport committee of the Lower Austrian state parliament (since 2008).

On April 28, 2011, he was the successor of Johann Heuras the Minister for Education, Youth, Physical Planning and public transport in the state government Pröll V selected.

After the state elections in Lower Austria in 2013 , the responsibilities within the state government of Pröll VI also changed . From May 1, 2013, Karl Wilfing was responsible for youth, state clinics, public transport, adult education and small games of chance in accordance with the rules of procedure of the Lower Austrian state government.

On March 22, 2018, he was elected to succeed Hans Penz as President of the Lower Austrian Parliament.
