Hugo von Maffei

Hugo Ritter and Edler von Maffei (born August 31, 1836 in Bamberg ; † May 13, 1921 in Munich ) was a Bavarian banker , entrepreneur and Reichsrat der Krone Bayern in Munich. At the time of the First World War he was one of the richest men in the Kingdom of Bavaria .

Life

Maffei studied law in Munich and Bonn from 1855 to 1859 and was active there in the Corps Franconia Munich and Hansea Bonn . In 1870 he inherited from his uncle Joseph Anton von Maffei the locomotive and machine factory JA Maffei located in the Hirschau in the English Garden of Munich . Like his uncle, he succeeded in acquiring international orders for the locomotive factory. Under Maffei's leadership, besides the production of locomotives, the construction of stationary steam engines and boilers formed an important branch of production. In 1901 the energy supply of the factory in the Hirschau was expanded. In 1908 the factory was modernized and new production halls were built. 1907/08 were with the Berliner Maschinenbau AG, vorm. Schwartzkopff, the Maffei-Schwartzkopff-Werke for the manufacture of electrical equipment was built in Wildau . The first electric locomotive was delivered in 1910 . From 1918 to 1924, locomotives were made for reparation deliveries. Maffei had the company's social benefits, including health and pension insurance, expanded.

Maffei enjoyed a great reputation in Bavaria and beyond. He was involved in the establishment of the Munich Reinsurance Company and the Bayerische Versicherungsbank . He was also appointed to the supervisory board of the Bavarian Central Bank (as 2nd chairman), Allianz-Versicherungs-AG , Maximilianshütte and as 2nd chairman of Siemens-Schuckertwerke in Berlin. In 1872 he was appointed to the Bavarian Agriculture Council. For his work, Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria entrusted him with the Commander of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown in 1909 . Maffei was also commander of the Legion of Honor and Dr.-Ing. E. h. of the TH Munich .

Maffei had at Berchtesgaden , the castle and estate Lustheim as well as to the 1902-founded Fideikommiss belonging, at the southern end of Lake Starnberg, in Iffeldorf to the Osterseen location Good Staltach . In 1887 he bought Gut Freiham with the Freiham Castle from the Bavarian chamberlain Carl Theodor Graf von Yrsch . In 1866 he began to renovate the castle belonging to the Yrsch'en Fideikommiss. Maffei had the Villa Maffei built in Feldafing by Emanuel von Seidl .

Maffei was married to his cousin Ida von Maffei (1841–1927) since 1861 and had two sons and three daughters with her, including Alfons von Maffei (1862–1926) and Laura Friederike Pauline Luise von Maffei (* 1871).
