Dieter Böhmdorfer (born May 11, 1943 in Trautenau , Bohemia ) is an Austrian lawyer and politician . He was Austrian Minister of Justice from February 29, 2000 to June 25, 2004 .

Life

Dieter Böhmdorfer, who comes from a Sudeten German medical family, studied law at the University of Vienna from 1962 to 1967 (graduating with a doctorate ) after attending elementary school and secondary school in Vienna . From 1973 to 2000 he worked as an independent lawyer. As a long-time lawyer for the former FPÖ supervisor Jörg Haider , who, like Böhmdorfer, was a member of the Wiener Burschenschaft Silvania, he led numerous trials against critics of Haider.

In 2000, Böhmdorfer, who is not a party member but is committed to the “free-minded community”, was appointed Minister of Justice as Michael Krüger's successor . Böhmdorfer's administration met with severe criticism from the opposition and the judges and public prosecutors. During his tenure there were seven motions of no confidence in the National Council against him by the opposition . He was also heavily criticized for his overly friendly relationship with his long-term client Jörg Haider: In the course of the "spy affair", Böhmdorfer described Haider as "above suspicion". As a result of the entry into government of the FPÖ, the EU-14 proposed "sanctions" against Austria to punish representatives of the people who violated the interests of the state with sanctions. Böhmdorfer considered it to be "certainly worth pursuing" and was considered for this statement in 2000 only member of the government criticized by name in the so-called wise report . On June 6, 2003 the youth court was dissolved by Dieter Böhmdorfer.

In the Schüssel II cabinet he had to hand over the consumer protection department again.

In the course of the government reshuffle after the historical loss of votes by the FPÖ in the European Parliament election on June 13, 2004, Böhmdorfer was replaced by Karin Miklautsch , a lawyer and former Carinthian state official . Böhmdorfer resumed his previous practice as a lawyer and has been a partner in the law firm Böhmdorfer-Schender, which he runs together with Rüdiger Schender , since 2011 .

In 2016, Böhmdorfer represented the FPÖ in its successful challenge to the election of the Federal President in Austria, which was narrowly lost by Norbert Hofer, at the Constitutional Court.
