Heinz Faßmann (born August 13, 1955 in Düsseldorf , Germany ) is an Austrian geographer and non-party politician .

He is a professor for applied geography , spatial research and spatial planning at the University of Vienna . From December 18, 2017 to May 28, 2019, he was the Federal Minister of Education nominated by the ÖVP - from January 2018 also responsible for science and research - in the Austrian federal government Kurz I and from May 28, 2019 in the provisional federal government Löger . He has held this office again in the Federal Government Short II since January 7, 2020 .

Life

Heinz Faßmann spent his childhood in Vienna, where he attended elementary school and grammar school and then studied geography and economic and social history at the University of Vienna from 1974 to 1980 . Subsequently, from 1981 to 1992, he was a research assistant at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Commission for Spatial Research; Institute for Demography). In 1991 Faßmann completed his habilitation at the University of Vienna. His venia legendi is human geography and spatial research.

In 1996 Faßmann was appointed full professor for applied geography II (geoinformatics) at the Technical University of Munich . In 2000, he moved to the University of Vienna as a professor for applied geography, spatial research and spatial planning. In 2006 he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences, Geography and Astronomy (until 2011) and Director of the Institute for Urban and Regional Research (ISR) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. From 2009 to 2016 he was a member of the Expert Council of German Foundations for Integration and Migration .

From 2011 to 2015 Faßmann was Vice Rector for Personnel Development and International Relations and from 2015 to 2017 Vice Rector for Research and International Affairs at the University of Vienna.

He has worked several times as a political advisor and expert for the Austrian federal government. From 2010 he was elected chairman of the “Expert Council for Integration” of the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs . From 2014 Faßmann was a member of the “Migration Council for Austria” of the Federal Ministry of the Interior , which was later renamed the Migration Commission.

On December 18, 2017, Faßmann was sworn in as Federal Minister of Education and Science of Austria and was then a member of the Kurz I government . He is non-party, but was nominated for ministerial office by the ÖVP .

Due to his swearing in as Federal Minister for Education, Science and Research, he resigned prematurely from his position as Vice Rector, chairing the Expert Council and membership in the Migration Commission. The function of director at the Institute for Urban and Regional Research of the Academy is suspended for the term of office as Federal Minister.

Private

Faßmann is married and has two children. He has been an Austrian citizen since 1994. What is striking is his height, which he himself states - in the correction of even higher rumored values ​​- with 2.03 meters.
