Scientific career

After her scientific work as a postdoc at the Vienna Biocenter , she switched to business and started as a product manager at the laboratory outfitter Margaritella-Biotrade GmbH. Looking for a way to combine business and science, she came across the Innovation Agency in 1999. There she headed the biotech impulse program commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (later LISA - Life Science Austria ) and in 2000 initiated the business plan competition Best of Biotech and the Vienna Life Science Cluster LISAvienna. The innovation agency was merged in 2003 through the amalgamation of Austrian funding organizations in Austria Wirtschaftsservice GmbH (aws) . As Head of Technology and Innovation, she was responsible for establishing new funding programs for (high-tech) business start-ups and for the commercial exploitation of research results. As managing director of the ARGE Life Science Vienna Region (later ARGE LISAvienna ) and the ARGE Impulsprogramm Creativwirtschaft (later impulse ), she was significantly involved in the development of innovative business areas such as life sciences and creative industries. She also developed the funding program for cinema film productions, Filmstandort Austria (FISA), which is financed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and handled by aws .

In September 2010 Hammerschmid was appointed rector of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (Vetmeduni Vienna). In 2013, it was unanimously confirmed by the Senate and University Council for the 2014 to 2018 term. In December 2015 Sonja Hammerschmid was elected President of the Austrian University Conference. When she took up this position in January 2016, she was the first woman to head this 105-year-old institution , succeeding the theologian Heinrich Schmidinger . When she entered politics in May 2016, both functions ended for her. Petra Winter succeeded her as rector .

After her political career, Hammerschmid applied to be rector of the University of Salzburg and the Art University of Linz . After she did not get into the three-party proposal of the university senate, she turned to the working group for equality issues of the University of Salzburg because of her alleged discrimination on the basis of gender. However, the Arbitration Commission came to the conclusion that there was no discrimination. This resulted in a delay in the appointment of the rector at the University of Salzburg. When she applied to be rector of the Linz Art University, she succumbed to Brigitte Hütter . She did not contest this decision.

politics

After Werner Faymann resigned as Federal Chancellor of the Federal Government Faymann II and as SPÖ Chairman in May 2016, Hammerschmid was brought into his government team by Faymann's successor Christian Kern . On 18 May 2016 it was by Federal President Heinz Fischer as Federal Minister of Education and women sworn in (on 1 July 2016 of a federal law passed because the women and equality agendas to the Health Minister on). In connection with her entry into politics and taking over the ministerial office, she accepted the SPÖ party membership.
