Sabine Oberhauser (born August 30, 1963 in Vienna ; † February 23, 2017 there ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). From September 1, 2014 until her death, she was Minister of Health of the Republic of Austria. With the reshuffle of the Federal Government Faymann II / Kern on May 18, 2016, the women's and equal treatment agendas were transferred to it on July 1, 2016 in an expansion of its department. As Minister of Health and Women , she subsequently headed the Federal Ministry for Health and Women .

Life

education

After graduating from high school , Oberhauser began studying medicine at the University of Vienna , where she received her doctorate in 1987. On April 30, 1997, she completed her training as a specialist in paediatrics and on October 31 , 1997, she completed her training as a general practitioner . She then completed training as an academic hospital manager at the Vienna University of Economics and Business , which she completed in 2002. In 2003 she completed a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) training at Danube University Krems .

Union career

From 1998 to 2010, Oberhauser initially worked as a freelance staff representative in the community workers' union (GdG). From 2001 to 2007 she was the chairperson, 2007 to 2010 the deputy chairperson of the staff group committee for doctors in the GdG. In 2003 she was elected chairwoman of the working group (ARGE) doctors in the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions (ÖGB) and held this position until 2010.

On July 2nd, 2009 Sabine Oberhauser was elected Vice President of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions with 92.77% at the 17th ÖGB Federal Congress. On April 11, 2013 she was elected chairwoman of the federal women’s organization at the 17th ÖGB Federal Women’s Congress. At the following 18th ÖGB Federal Congress, she was confirmed as Vice President of the ÖGB on June 20, 2013. She was the first female doctor to hold this post.

Political career

The social democrat Oberhauser made her first political experiences in the district executive committee of the SPÖ- Alsergrund (9th district of Vienna), to which she belonged from 2005 to 2009.

After the National Council election in 2006 , she first entered parliament on October 30, 2006 as a member of the National Council via the SPÖ federal election list and belonged to the National Council in the XXIII. Legislative period until October 27, 2008. At the time she was also the health spokesperson for the Social Democratic parliamentary group. In 2007 Oberhauser was appointed as a member of the Austrian Social and Health Forum by decree of the then Federal Minister for Social Affairs and Consumer Protection , Erwin Buchinger , and was a member of this body until 2013. After the National Council election in 2008 (XXIV legislative period from October 28, 2008 to October 28, 2013), she initially lost her seat as a member of the parliament because of the lower number of seats in her party. The appointment of a member of their party as a member of the Federal Government Faymann I could move up to the federal election list and was again in Parliament on 3 December 2008 sworn in and was appointed to the Social Democratic parliamentary group spokeswoman for the Social. She was able to keep her mandate after the 2013 National Council election (XXV legislative period since October 29, 2013) and held it until August 31, 2014.

Following the restructuring of the Faymann II federal government, Oberhauser was appointed Minister of Health on September 1, 2014 as the successor to Alois Stöger . After the resignation of Chancellor Werner Faymann and the subsequent government reshuffle on May 18, 2016, Chancellor Christian Kern, who was sworn in the day before, named her as Minister-designate. The women's agendas were separated from the previous Federal Ministry of Education and Women with the amendment to the Federal Ministries Act 2016 and added to Oberhauser's Ministry of Health. Her predecessor as Minister of Health, Alois Stöger, last represented Oberhauser after she was prevented from taking office by the consequences of the illness.

In terms of party politics, Oberhauser was a co-opted member of the SPÖ Federal Party Executive and the SPÖ Federal Party Presidium.

Other political functions

In 1999, Oberhauser moved to the Medical Chamber for Vienna as a member of the Chamber of Commerce (until 2006), and from 2003 to 2006 she also served as the Presidential Advisor. From 2004 she was a board member of the Association of Wiener Frauenhäuser . From 2004 to 2007 she was a member of the Vienna State Medical Council. From 2004 to 2006 Oberhauser was the chairwoman of the Austrian Women's Ring and a member of the board of the European Women's Lobby (EFL). From 2004 to 2012 Oberhauser was Vice President of the Association of Social Democratic Academics, Intellectuals and Artists (BSA). From 2005 to 2009 she held the office of women chairwoman of the BSA. In 2004 she was elected chairwoman of the Social Democratic Doctors in Austria , and in 2011 she became their deputy chairwoman.

Private

Oberhauser was married and has two daughters. In February 2015, Oberhauser announced that she was suffering from abdominal cancer . After a temporary improvement, it was announced at the end of July 2016 that she was about to have her next chemotherapy. Only a few days before her death did she hand over her position as a substitute to Stöger after she had announced that she would go to the hospital again because of a complication ( peritonitis ). Oberhauser died on February 23, 2017 as a result of her cancer.

After her cremation in the Simmering fire hall , her urn was buried in the Hietzingen cemetery (group 70, row 15, number 10).
