Richard Biebl

Richard Biebl (born February 12, 1908 in Salzburg , † February 25, 1974 in Vienna ) was an Austrian botanist and plant physiologist .

Life

After studying natural sciences in connection with physics and philosophy at the University of Vienna , Biebl passed the teaching examination in 1931 and taught at various secondary schools in Vienna until 1939. As early as 1930, he had also worked as a demonstrator at the Plant Physiology Institute of the University of Vienna, where he completed his habilitation in 1938 for anatomy and physiology of plants and was appointed associate professor in 1939.

In 1964 he took over the management of the Plant Physiological Institute at the University of Vienna as a full professor, which he held until his death. In 1969 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina Scholars' Academy .

He introduced the term “protoplasmic ecology” into botany and published, among other things, “Praktikum der Pflanzenanatomie” (1950, with Hermann Germ) and “Protoplasmic Ecology of Plants” (1962).
