Federal Ministry for Buildings and Technology

The Federal Ministry for Buildings and Technology ("Ministry of Buildings") is a former Austrian authority that was active between 1966 and 1987.

Emergence

In the immediate post-war period in 1945, a state office for public buildings existed for a short time . After that, the Federal Ministry of Trade and Reconstruction was responsible for most of the affairs of what would later become the Ministry of Construction, while the Federal Ministry of Social Administration was responsible for housing and settlement .

In 1966, the Federal Ministry for Trade and Reconstruction was divided into the Federal Ministry for Trade, Commerce and Industry and the Federal Ministry for Buildings and Technology in the Federal Government of Klaus II .

Responsibilities

(Last status before the dissolution in 1987)

  • Administration of all federal buildings and real estate, including matters of state building construction , road construction , hydraulic engineering with regard to waterways as well as water supply and sewerage
  • Construction coordination
  • Federal Furniture Administration
  • Matters of construction, housing and settlement (including reconstruction, housing subsidies , public housing and allotment gardens, expropriation for the purpose of rehabilitation and other rehabilitation measures; structural matters of civil defense as well as spatial and regional planning)
  • Matters of economic and technical research
  • Technical testing; Shooting matters; Measurement, weight, calibration and surveying
  • Matters of all other technical test and safety marks with the exception of hallmarking, standards
  • Matters relating to the normalization and typification of electrical systems and equipment and safety measures in this area
  • Marking and surveying the national borders
  • Mechanical engineering matters, including steam boilers
  • Matters relating to engineering and civil engineering, including matters relating to their professional representatives
  • Matters of the companies that are entrusted with the construction and maintenance of federal highways by federal law

Later exercise of responsibilities

When the Vranitzky II government took over in 1987, the Federal Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Industry as well as Buildings and Technology were merged again to form the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs .

When the German Schüssel I government took office in 2000, the following matters of the former Ministry of Construction were transferred to the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology and have remained there to this day (since 2020 under the name of the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology ) :

Matters relating to federal highways, in particular matters relating to road construction; Matters of the companies that are entrusted with the construction and maintenance of federal highways by federal law; Hydraulic engineering matters relating to waterways, water supply and sewerage.

The other matters of the former building ministry are now handled by the federal ministry for digitization and business location.
