Josef Smolle

Josef Smolle (born August 23, 1958 in Leibnitz ) is an Austrian dermatologist and venereologist . From 2008 to 2016 he was rector of the Medical University of Graz . From January 24, 2018 to June 4, 2019, he was a member of the National Council . He has been a member of parliament again since December 19, 2019.

Life

After primary school, Josef Smolle attended the New Language High School in Leibnitz, where he graduated in 1976 . He then studied human medicine at the University of Graz , where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1981 . During his studies he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Histology and Embryology and at the Cytological Institute of the State Hospital Graz , after completing his studies he was a regular doctor at the hospital of the Barmherzige Brüder Graz-Eggenberg and completed specialist training at the University Clinic for Dermatology and Venereology . In 1987 he became a specialist in skin and venereal diseases and a senior physician in charge of the ward at the University Clinic for Dermatology and the Clinical Department for General Dermatology.

In 1988 he completed his habilitation with the paper Mononuclear cell patterns of the skin - an immunohistochemical and morphometrical analysis for the subject of dermatology and venereology. In 1997 he became an associate professor at the University Clinic for Dermatology and Venereology. In 2002 he completed the university course in hospital management at Danube University Krems and became a member of the Supreme Medical Council of the Republic of Austria, to which he has been a member since then. In 2006 he was appointed professor for new media in medical knowledge transfer and processing at the institute for medical informatics, statistics and documentation of the now independent Medical University of Graz (until 2004 medical faculty of the University of Graz) and head of the department of Virtual Medical Campus (VMC ) ordered.

From February 15, 2008 he acted as rector of the Medical University of Graz, in February 2011 he was re-elected by the University Council for a second four-year term beginning February 2012. On February 15, 2016, Hellmut Samonigg succeeded him in this role. In his scientific work he deals, among other things, with the early detection of skin tumors by means of new, imaging methods, in teaching with new media in medical teaching and interactive electronic teaching and learning methods.

In addition to his academic work, he is involved in adult education as a board member of the Austrian Urania for Styria , of which he has been president since 2017.

Since 1988 he has been married to the university professor Freyja-Maria Smolle-Jüttner , with whom he has four children.

In the 2017 National Council election , he ran for fourth place on the Styrian People's Party list . On January 24, 2018, he succeeded Juliane Bogner-Strauss in the National Council , who became Minister for Women, Family and Youth in the Federal Government Brief I in December 2017 .

In 2015, Parliament passed a general ban on smoking in restaurants from May 2018. In the course of the government negotiations in 2017, the Federal Government Kurz I decided to lift this smoking ban. Smolle then announced that he would vote in the National Council against the planned lifting of the smoking ban. In February 2018, when asked how Josef Smolle would vote on the turquoise-blue motion to overturn the smoking ban, Iris Brüggler, the press spokeswoman for the ÖVP Club, explained Smolle's position: “The moment he became a member of parliament, he said, that he will vote true to the pact ” . According to Brüggler, Smolle made his statement in December 2017 as a private person. On March 22, 2018, he stayed away from both the debate and the vote in the National Council.

In June 2019 Juliane Bogner-Strauss accepted her mandate again, Josef Smolle left the National Council. In December 2019, Bogner-Strauß became regional councilor in the state government of Schützenhöfer II . Josef Smolle, a representative of the ÖVP workers' wing, moved back into the National Council on December 19, 2019 after Martina Kaufmann switched from the state list to the basic mandate in Graz.
