Hellmut Samonigg

Hellmut Samonigg (born October 8, 1951 in Spittal an der Drau ) is an Austrian oncologist . Since 2016 he has been the rector of the Medical University of Graz .

Life

After graduating from high school, Hellmut Samonigg studied at the University of Graz from 1970 , where he received his doctorate in medicine in 1979 . In parallel to his subsequent training as a specialist in internal medicine, which he completed in 1986, he completed training in psychoanalysis . In 1990 he completed his habilitation in the field of internal medicine, and in 1992 he was appointed university professor at the University of Graz. Until 1995 he completed further specialist training in hemato-oncology.

From 1985 he headed the oncology working group at the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Graz and from 1994 to 2016 the Clinical Department for Oncology at the University Clinic for Internal Medicine. From 1999 to 2016 he was also head of the university palliative medicine facility at the Medical University of Graz. From 2001 to 2003 he was Vice Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Graz, then until 2008 he was Vice Rector of the now independent Medical University and then until 2016 head of the organizational unit for the development of the Med Campus .

From 2013 he was President of the Austrian Society for Hematology & Medical Oncology (OeGHO), followed by Andreas Petzer in 2017. Under the umbrella of the OeGHO, the Don't Smoke initiative was founded in September 2014 in order to create greater awareness of the consequences of tobacco smoking . One of the fellow campaigners was the journalist Kurt Kuch, who died of lung cancer in early 2015 . In 2015, the Austrian parliament passed a general ban on smoking in restaurants from May 2018 . The Federal Government Kurz I decided in the course of government negotiations in December 2017 to lift this smoking ban. Hellmut Samonigg's predecessor as rector of the Medical University of Graz, Josef Smolle , then announced that he would vote in the National Council against the planned lifting of the smoking ban.

In December 2015, Samonigg was elected Rector of the Medical University of Graz by the University Council for a four-year term of office; on February 15, 2016, he succeeded Josef Smolle in this role. In January 2019 he was reappointed for his second term of office as rector of the Med Uni Graz from February 15, 2020 to February 14, 2024.

In May 2018 he was awarded the special prize of the jury for his involvement in the initiative “Don't smoke” as part of the “Smoke Free Awards”, which was presented on the initiative of VIVID, the Styrian specialist agency for addiction prevention.
