The Austrian Society for Hematology & Medical Oncology (OeGHO) is a specialist society of hematologists and oncologists .

tasks and goals

According to its own information, the OeGHO wants to improve the information for those affected and optimize the care of patients with cancer and blood diseases - from prevention to early detection and diagnosis to treatment and aftercare. To this end, the OeGHO propagates interdisciplinary cooperation between all those involved in cancer therapy and promotes research in the field of hematology and oncology. As a joint project of the German, Austrian and Swiss Societies for Hematology and Medical Oncology, the OeGHO presented trend-setting guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in 2013/2014. These guidelines are available at onkopedia.at for all doctors, but also for those affected. In addition, the OeGHO strives to establish internal oncologists as contact persons for drug tumor therapy. To achieve this, the OeGHO conducts active public relations work and implements a number of communication measures. In addition, the OeGHO has a strong focus on training and further education, organizes events and has established its own educational service provider with the Onconovum Academy .

Members

According to its own information, the association has around 800 members. The majority of them are specialists in internal medicine with an additional subject in hematology and internal oncology . But there are also members who are still in specialist training, come from nursing or other medical professions. The next generation of specialists in hematology and internal oncology are united in the Young Hematologists & Oncologists Group Austria (YHOGA), which is committed to promoting exchange, training and career opportunities.

Board

The Board of Directors is a voluntary body made up of the Presidents, Vice Presidents, the Secretary and the Treasurer. The board members are elected by the general assembly and jointly manage the association. The term of office of the presidents and the vice-presidents is two years each. The current president is Wolfgang Hilbe.

Research funding and awards

The association promotes translational and clinical research activities in the field of hematology and oncology as well as communication between researchers and clinically active doctors. In addition, the OeGHO research groups in Austria offer the opportunity to present their planned or ongoing research projects on the OeGHO website.

In addition, the association has been awarding research grants to young scientists since 2008, recognizing scientific work with prizes and enabling participation in international congresses by awarding congress grants:
