Freyja-Maria Smolle-Jüttner

Freyja-Maria Smolle-Jüttner (born April 10, 1958 in Graz as Freyja-Maria Jüttner ) is an Austrian surgeon and thorax specialist.

She is the wife of the dermatologist and venereologist Josef Smolle , who was rector of the Medical University of Graz from 2008 to 2016 .

Freyja-Maria Jüttner was born on April 10, 1958 in Graz, where she grew up and received her school education. After graduating from school , she studied medicine at the University of Graz and received her doctorate in 1981. She then completed her training as a specialist in surgery by 1987 . This was later followed by the additional specialist diplomas in thoracic surgery (1994) and intensive care medicine (1997). In 1988 she qualified as a professor for surgery with a special focus on thoracic surgery and hyperbaric surgery. In the same year she married her fellow student Josef Smolle , who completed his habilitation in the same year, and with whom she subsequently had four children. Three of her four children are now (as of 2019) also medical professionals.

As early as 1987, Smolle-Jüttner worked as a senior physician in charge of the ward at the clinical department for thoracic and hyperbaric surgery at the LKH University Hospital Graz . In 1999 she was appointed deputy head of department. In 1997 she was awarded certificates for diving and hyperbaric medicine of the German and Austrian Society for Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine . On September 1, 2003, Smolle-Jüttner succeeded Gerhard Friehs as university professor for surgery with special emphasis on thoracic surgery at the University of Graz. Since January 1, 2005 she has been the head of the Clinical Department for Thoracic and Hyperbaric Surgery. On November 14, 2005, the native of Graz became the new seventh member of the University Council of the Medical University of Innsbruck parallel to her work in her hometown, succeeding Bernhard Fleckenstein , who had applied for the position of Rector of Innsbruck.

At the Medical University of Graz, Smolle-Jüttner has also been the 2nd deputy of the clinic board since November 21, 2012 and has been module coordinator for diving medicine and hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) since May 17, 2017. In 2013/14 she was President of the 55th Austrian Surgeon Congress. To date (as of May 16, 2019) she supervised 32 theses from 2008 to 2018.

On June 20, 2015, she was on the rampage in Graz together with family members in the center of Graz and was one of the first aiders to take care of the injured. Her husband and two of her children also rushed downtown.
