Bernhard Fleckenstein (doctor)

Bernhard Fleckenstein (born August 10, 1944 in Würzburg ) is a German human medicine specialist with a focus on virology . From 1978 to 2012 he held the chair for Clinical Virology and headed the Institute for Clinical and Molecular Virology at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg .

Bernhard Fleckenstein was born as the son of the pharmacologist and physiologist Albrecht Fleckenstein and his wife Ilse, nee. Brabandt. After attending a humanistic grammar school, Fleckenstein studied medicine at the universities of Freiburg and Vienna from 1963 . From 1969 on he worked after the medical state examination as a medical assistant in the municipal hospitals in Karlsruhe and the surgical clinic of the medical academy in Lübeck. Finally, he received his doctorate in physiology from the University of Freiburg in 1970 .

From 1970 to 1975 Fleckenstein worked as a research assistant at the Universities of Göttingen and Erlangen-Nuremberg. After his habilitation in 1975 in virology, he initially worked as a private lecturer at the Institute for Clinical Virology in Erlangen. In 1976 he went to Harvard Medical School in Boston as Associate Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics . After his appointment to the chair for clinical virology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, he returned to Germany. Fleckenstein remained connected to his institute. He turned down calls to the Chair of Virology at the University of Freiburg in 1987 and the Chair of Virology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich in 1994. In 2012 he retired.

Fleckenstein was President of the Society for Virology from 1990 to 1996 . He is a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (since 1996) and the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz. In 1992 he was accepted as a full member of the Academia Europaea . He was also head of the National Reference Center for Retroviruses .
