Aronson Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Aronson Prize is a science prize awarded since 1921 for outstanding achievements in microbiology and immunology .

history

The German pediatrician and bacteriologist Hans Aronson (1865-1919) decreed in his will a large part of its capital for the foundation of a prize for excellence in microbiology and immunology, as well as in the field of experimental therapy. The annually awarded prize is presented to the winners every two years on the anniversary of Hans Aronson's death, March 8th. As a result of the seizure of power by the National Socialists , Jewish scientists were excluded from the award of the prize, and the name of the founder was also removed from that of the foundation. From 1945 to 1955 there was no awarding of the prizes, it was only awarded again in 1956 and was endowed with 5000 marks.

In 1969, the dissolved Board of Trustees at the initiative of the then chairman Georg Henneberg the Foundation and transferred the as a result of, the Second World War and after the currency reform remaining funds to the State of Berlin to secure the continued existence of the price. The Berlin Senate has awarded the prize since 1970 . At 10,000 euros (previously 20,000 marks), it is the most highly endowed research award in Berlin.

The award winners include later winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine , such as Karl Landsteiner (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1930) and Gerhard Domagk (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1939, awarded in 1947).
