Weiden am See is a market town with 2,480 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Burgenland in the Neusiedl am See district in Austria . The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Védeny .
geography
The wine-growing community on the northeast bank of Lake Neusiedl is located about two kilometers southeast of the district capital, Neusiedl am See . The only village is Weiden am See , parts of the village are the holiday area, the Grenzgasse settlement , the Seepark and the lido area.
history
Weiden was first mentioned in a document in 1338 and after 1413 came into the possession of the Raaber ( Győr ) cathedral chapter. In 1588 the place was granted market rights. The place suffered severe damage in the course of the Turkish Wars in 1529 and 1683 as well as in the Kuruzzenkrieg from 1704 to 1709. In 1606 a major fire devastated the place.
Like the whole of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary until 1920/21 (so-called "German West Hungary"). Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Védeny be used.
After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, most of the German-speaking western Hungary was assigned to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). Weiden am See has been a market town since 1588 (when Rudolf II was granted market rights).

In the market town of Weiden am See, the current ÖVP mayor Wilhelm Schwarz was able to defend his office in the runoff election. He prevailed against the SPÖ candidate Heinrich Hareter with 951 to 872 votes. However, the ÖVP lost its absolute majority in the municipal council and fell back to 45.80% (11 instead of 13 seats). The SPÖ increased by 0.8 percentage points and came to 29.85%, which means that it was able to keep its seven mandates. The list The Greens and Independent Weiden am See came to 12.78% and again to 3 mandates . The Independent Party Weiden (UPW) , which was running for the first time, received 8.8% (2 seats ).
