Jois is a market town with 1644 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Burgenland in the Neusiedl am See district in Austria . The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Nyulas .

geography

The community is located in Northern Burgenland. Jois is located 130 m above sea level on the slopes of the Leithagebirge directly on Lake Neusiedl in the Austrian Burgenland . Parts of the municipality belong to the nature park Neusiedlersee - Leithagebirge .

history

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Nyulas be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). There was a market judge as early as 1429 . The date of the launch is not known.

Sports

Apart from the usual leisure activities, shooting is very important in Jois . A rifle house with a terrace offers the spectator space for throwing pigeon, trap and parcour shooting. Lake Neusiedl is not only ideal for practicing various sports such as swimming , sailing , kite surfing and windsurfing in summer , but is also ideal for ice skating , ice sailing and ice surfing in winter . Three sailing clubs - the Seewind Yacht Club , the Jois Yacht Club and the “Austrian Army Yacht Club ” - operate their own club facilities on the grounds of the Joiser ( yacht ) port .

Culinary specialties

The "Joiser Heart Cherry ", which also adorns the town's coat of arms, has its origin in Jois . Several Heurigenkeller and wine taverns invite you to stop.

Economy and Infrastructure

Jois is mainly a summer tourist community (25,200 overnight stays) and a wine-growing place . Since 2008, the drive technology manufacturer Zoerkler , who moved from Vienna, has been the only large industrial company in the community.
