The nature park Neusiedler See - Leithagebirge is part of the Austrian nature and landscape protection area Neusiedlersee and the surrounding area .

The nature park, founded in 2006, is located between the northwestern shore of Lake Neusiedl and the southeastern edge of the Leitha Mountains in the districts of Neusiedl am See and Eisenstadt Umgebung in Burgenland .

The entire area of ​​the nature park is a Natura 2000 area, a protected area of ​​the Ramsar Convention and a biosphere reserve . It belongs to the core zone of the Fertő / Neusiedler See cultural landscape, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

The nature park has an area of ​​around 11,000 hectares, which extends to parts of the nature park communities Donnerskirchen , Purbach am Neusiedler See , Breitenbrunn am Neusiedler See , Winden am See and Jois . It is bordered on the northwest by the Natural Park Mannersdorf desert in Lower Austria conservation area Leitha Mountains and the southwest by the Burgenland Nature Park Rosalia-Kogelberg .

As of January 1, 2014, 9,195 people lived in the nature park communities inside and outside the areas belonging to the nature park.

The terrain of the region is characterized by the transition from the Alps to the Little Hungarian Plain . While the highest point of the Leithagebirge at about 440  m above sea level. The Wulka, along with some smaller streams such as the Wolfsbrunnenbach, the Angerbach and the Rákosbach, is the only river that flows into Lake Neusiedl. In the river delta near Donnerskirchen the reed belt of the lake has its largest extension with five kilometers.

Natural monuments in the nature park are the Ludlloch (bear cave) in Winden am See, a winter linden tree in Purbach am Neusiedler See and an English oak in Donnerskirchen.

The nature reserves Hackelsberg (Jois), Jungerberg (Jois) and Thenauriegel (Breitenbrunn am Neusiedler See) are located in the nature park. Dry grassland ( hut pasture ) and dry bush forest with downy oaks and rough meadows are among the vegetation that is worth protecting.

The nature park management is the responsibility of the regional association Neusiedlersee - Leithagebirge. This association emerged from the Cherry Blossom Region Regional Association in 2000 and initiated the creation of the nature park as well as accompanying measures such as reducing the volume of traffic in the region, securing the cherry tree population by planting new trees, signposting themed and hiking trails, developing a nature tourism visitor program and upgrading the historical town centers with various infrastructure projects.

In addition to the 22-kilometer panorama hiking trail that connects all five municipalities of the nature park, there are local and sometimes cross-municipal hiking trails in the individual locations. The B10 cycle path, which goes around Lake Neusiedl, and the 44 kilometer long cycle path B12 (cherry blossom cycle path) lead through all five nature park communities.

In Jois, Purbach and Breitenbrunn there are museums with a focus on local and regional history. The sculpture park by the sculptor Wander Bertoni in Winden am See covers an area of ​​around four hectares and contains around 480 objects. In 2001 an exhibition pavilion was built for the open-air museum. The artist's egg collection with around 4,000 exhibits has been housed in a new building since 2010.

In Purbach, the Ramsar information center for the Ramsar area Neusiedler See - Seewinkel, which extends over 59,000 hectares, was set up in the house on Kellerplatz next to the headquarters of the regional association.

In the 2012/2013 winter season, 8,213 people, 2,706 of whom were foreigners, stayed in 99 private and commercial accommodation establishments with a total of 1,179 beds in the five nature park communities. In the 2013 summer season, 78,460 people, 29,616 of whom were foreigners, stayed in 122 private and commercial establishments with 1,347 beds.
