The Roman Catholic Old Parish Church of Jois is free in the cemetery on the hill of the Upper Village in the market town of Jois in the Neusiedl am See district in Burgenland . The former parish church of St. Georg belongs to the Deanery Neusiedl am See in the Diocese of Eisenstadt . The church is a listed building .

history

The parish church dates back to the 13th century. During the Reformation it was temporarily Protestant. Romanesque components, probably from the former cemetery wall, are kept in the vestibule. The pre-baroque church was probably destroyed during the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna (1683). The church was rebuilt from 1757 to 1770. The church was renovated and consecrated in 1865. 1969/1970 was a restoration.

architecture

The uniform baroque building with a three-axis, three-storey south facade has a short tower with a pyramid helmet above a cut volute gable. A retracted choir adjoins the nave with a five-eighth closing . A low sacristy with a pilaster structure is attached to the west. The south portal shows the year 1757.

The triaxial vestibule has the bell above it. The two-bay nave with square vaults between double ledges on flat pilasters is a high, bright room with rounded corners with vaulted coves. The south pore with a vaulted paneled parapet and a baroque grille is open to the bell room. The triumphal arch to the choir is rounded. The choir bay has a square vault with a shell over the apse, which is rounded on the inside.

Paintings from the construction period show Christ and the Samaritan woman on the triumphal arch and the washing of feet in the choir vault.

The free-standing cemetery chapel on the right in front of the main front of the church is a simple rectangular building and shows the year 1679 in the portal inscription.

Furnishing

The high altar was built for the parish church of St. Michael in Sopron and was transferred here in 1865. The three-storey structure with double columns placed across the corner has an attachment. The altarpiece of Our Lady with Donors was painted by F. Storno (1865). The original altarpiece of Our Lady and St. Michael von Martino Altomonte stayed in Sopron. The white framed figures show the hll. Kings Stephan and Ladislaus, over the sacrificial passage portals the hll. Rochus and Sebastian, in the essay St. George (originally St. Michael), and two female saints.

The similar niche altars on the triumphal arches were built around 1760. The left side altar bears the figure of St. George above a richly framed relief St. Johannes Nepomuk. The right side altar bears the figure Enthroned Maria in a niche above the tabernacle in a tabernacle-like housing with the Lamb of God above with seven seals and in the top God the Father and moving angel figures.

The pulpit around 1760 shows rich Rococo ornamentation on the basket and the relief of the calling of an apostle and the seated figures of Faith and Hope and a trumpet angel on the high sounding cover .

The 14 Stations of the Cross are from the 18th century. The organ with the seated figure of King David was built around 1760 and restored in 1969. Under the organ is a polychrome wooden figure of Vesper from the 18th century.
