history

The area was already densely populated in Roman times, a few kilometers west of today's town is the Roman Villa Bruckneudorf, one of the most important villa finds in Eastern Austria.

The place was mentioned on March 25, 1264 (or 1268) for the first time under the name " Perun ". At that time, King Béla IV gave lands near Parndorf to the Wieselburg citizen Leopold. Prehistoric and Roman finds as well as Celtic - Boi silver coins are available from the time before. Parndorf belonged to Wieselburg County . In 1529, like many other villages in the area, the area fell victim to the Turkish invasion during the first Turkish siege of Vienna . After that the area was repopulated by Croatians from the Dalmatian coastal area. Further destruction took place in the course of the Turkish invasions in 1570, 1619/20, 1683 and during the Kuruc uprising in 1709 as well as by a fire in 1945.

In the north of the village are the remains of the Kuruzzenschanze : It is an old military fortification and consists of an earth wall with a trench in front, in the course of which there were some brick watchtowers. The hill was created from 1703 to 1711 during the anti-Habsburg uprising under Franz Rákóczi against his troops, the Kuruzzen . The hill ran from Petronell via Parndorf to Tabor near Neusiedl am See .

Parndorf was elevated to market status in 1810, but according to Statistics Austria no longer bears this title. In 1837 the place received a post office.

In 1863 the place got the final name "Parndorf". Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Pandorfalu be used.

Parndorf Airport was established in 1915, was used for pilot training during World War II and was used by the Red Army air forces until 1955.

After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

On August 27, 2015 Parndorf hit the headlines of the world press because a refrigerated truck full of 71 bodies of asphyxiated refugees was found on a hard shoulder on the motorway between Neusiedl am See and Parndorf.

Population development

According to the 2001 census, 66% of the population profess to be German-speaking and 17% to the Burgenland-Croatian ethnic group. In addition, 4% describe themselves as Croatians . 6% of the community population list Turkish as their predominant language of everyday life.

79% of the community's population are members of the Roman Catholic Church . For Islam to 7% profess no religious affiliation are also 7% of the population.

The re-establishment of the parish and the change of patronage take place after the destruction in 1570 in 1572. The tower of the church stands on Romanesque foundations, the masonry of which dates back to the 12th-13th centuries. Century is dated. The nave was built in 1716–1718 according to plans by Lucas von Hildebrandt . In the basement of the tower there is a Romanesque groin vaulted chapel. Since 2008, the original wall painting from the Baroque period, discovered around 1990 but not yet uncovered, has been restored in the apse of this church. The frescoes are attributed to the artist Johann Gfall .
  • To the east of the church is the crypt chapel of the Harrach family , consecrated to the Holy Cross from the first half of the 19th century.
  • On the road to Bruckneudorf there is a plague chapel from the first half of the 18th century, the time when the last plague epidemics were rampant in Europe. Parndorf was last hit by epidemics like the plague in 1713. The chapel is dedicated to St. Rochus .

  • Rail: In 1854 the place received a rail connection through the construction of the Eastern Railway from Vienna via Parndorf to Raab . With the further construction of the railway lines to Sopron ( Pannoniabahn ) and to Bratislava (branch of the Eastern Railway) Parndorf became a railway junction. Next to the Parndorf train station there is the Parndorf Ort train station with a large Park & Ride area with 430 parking spaces. Currently, only regional express and regional trains stop in Parndorf as well as some rapid transit lines that connect the place with Vienna, Bruck an der Leitha, Bratislava, Győr , Eisenstadt , Sopron, Neusiedl am See and Pamhagen. Since 2017, Parndorf has been under discussion as a location for a cargo handling hub from Russian broad gauge to (west) European standard gauge. For this purpose, an approximately 160 km long broad-gauge railway line to Kosice in Slovakia would have to be built, see broad-gauge line Košice – Vienna .
