geography
Community structure
Mönchhof is the only place in the municipality. Districts are the Marienkron Abbey and the Edmundshof.
history
The place name is derived from belonging to the monks of Heiligenkreuz . The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Barátfalu . About 800 years ago, Cistercian monks from Heiligenkreuz Abbey settled in the area around today's Mönchhof. They made the land that was previously mostly swampy arable. In 1217 King Andrew II of Hungary gave them the former Petschenegen estate Leginthov as a permanent possession. The deed of donation from 1217 mentions the Mönchhof community for the first time under the name Leginthov .
As a result of the Turkish victory at Mohacs in 1526, the settlement was completely devastated; In 1533 the monastery pledged the settlement of the city of Bruck / Leitha and sold it to the Stamp brothers in 1534. Through royal intervention, ownership of the monastery was restituted in 1545.
Mönchhof was the seat of the imperial stud from 1553 to 1652. The stud people were predominantly Protestant and were in a sometimes violent conflict with the Catholic residents and their pastor. The area was under Hungarian administration from 1648 to 1920/21 as part of Moson County
Viticulture is traditionally the economic base of the community. Starting with the initiatives of the Cistercian monks, who brought their knowledge from Burgundy via Heiligenkreuz to Mönchhof, the place is considered the oldest wine-growing community in Austria. With the Marienkron Cistercian convent , which was established in 1955 by sisters from the Seligenthal monastery on land donated by the Heiligenkreuz Abbey, the larger community has found a spiritual and health center that extends far beyond the local borders.
