The Andau border post and a Trabant 601 in the museum

The Mönchhof Village Museum gives an insight into the everyday life of farmers and craftsmen in Heideboden (the old name for the northern part of what is now known as the “Seewinkel” region) from around 1890 to the late 1960s. Using around 35 buildings with workshops, work tools and furnishings, the village museum tries to bring back to life the everyday life of this time, which was largely characterized by agriculture. In addition to the permanent exhibition area, there are regular special exhibitions in the Mönchhof Village Museum.

The open-air museum is divided into three areas

  • Basics of livelihood security
  • Stocking for personal use
  • Typical village with old houses and workshops
    • Elementary school
    • Inn
    • Grocery store
    • movie theater
    • Municipal Office
    • post Office
    • Fire department depot
    • Dairy house
    • Agricultural machinery workshop
    • church
    • Semi-economy , consisting of
      • the homestead of a well-off wine-growing family (economic chambers, cattle sheds, wagon sheds, barn and their own wine cellar) and
      • Living rooms for the village baker, including a bakery and a small shop.

Special position at the Andau border crossing

The Andau border crossing installed in the Mönchhof village museum has a special position . It refers to the history of the Hungarian-Burgenland border area in the second half of the 20th century. The original border post and the replica of the border station remind on the one hand of the events of the Hungarian uprising in 1956 , on the other hand of the escape movement of GDR citizens from Hungary to Austria in 1989. The Trabant placed in front of the border post was converted to Hungarian in 1989 by a GDR citizen Territory left behind when he fled across the green border to Andau.
