Museum seal of approval

The Austrian Museum Seal of Approval is a quality award given by Austrian museums since 2002 and identifies particularly excellent museum work. ICOM Austria and Museums Association Austria awarded once a year at the Austrian Museum Day this award for high-quality museum work.

The award of the "Museum Seal of Approval" means public evidence that the museum assumes responsibility for the preservation of the cultural heritage, that visitors can expect a high-quality presentation and a minimum level of services and that the museum, its sponsor and its employees comply with the "ethical guidelines for Museums ”. The seal of approval can be achieved after completing an evaluation process. The seal of approval confirms the minimum standard achieved by a museum.

By October 2014, 223 museums in Austria had been awarded this prize. In October 2015, 17 Austrian museums were newly awarded the museum seal of approval, 27 seals of approval were extended by five years, and nine applications were rejected. In October 2016, 16 Austrian museums were newly awarded the museum seal of approval, 17 seals of quality were extended by five years, eight applications were rejected due to non-compliance with criteria, and the seal of approval was suspended for two institutions. In 2015 the list comprised a total of 235 and in 2016 a total of 248 houses. In 2018, the museum seal of approval was awarded to 13 Austrian museums until 2023, so that as of October 2018, a total of 266 Austrian museums bear the museum seal of approval.

With the seal of approval, the museum guarantees the visitor some values, such as:

  • assuming responsibility for the preservation of cultural heritage,
  • a high quality presentation and a minimum level of service,
  • recognition of the “ethical guidelines for museums”.

Advantages for the museums through the award:

  • easier funding from the public sector
  • the interest of sponsors and advertisers
  • higher confidence in loan items
