The Landesmuseum Burgenland in Eisenstadt shows the development of Burgenland in the Pannonian region. Its sub-areas include, on the one hand, natural history such as geology and biology of the country and, on the other hand, the impact of humans with archeology, art, culture, folklore, economic and contemporary history.

history

After Burgenland became the ninth federal state to join Austria in 1921 , the Eisenstadt wine merchant Sándor Wolf set up a state museum that was supposed to represent the identity of the new federal state. He became the founding director, but had to leave Austria after the “Anschluss” . His collection was "Aryanized" , but restituted after the war. A part with archaeological artifacts could be acquired again at an auction in 1958 and is still part of the collection today.

building

The museum was located in the Leinnerhaus from 1926 to 1938 , which was owned by the wine merchant family Leopold Wolf's Söhne . At Museumsgasse 1 to 11, where the Burgenland State Museum was founded from 1938 to 1939, houses from the 17th to 19th centuries stood and still stand. Sándor Wolf's house is at number 5, a group of buildings with different stylistic elements and remarkable wrought iron work. Wolf had already built up a collection of antiquities here, which is owned by the State Museum. Houses nos. 9 and 11 were demolished in 1968, the museum was expanded with a modern extension according to the plans of the architects Hans Puchhammer and Gunther Wawrik and opened in 1976.
