Hanns Schmid

Hanns Schmid (born May 26, 1958 ) is a Swiss graphic artist , photographer and publisher .

Life

Schmid's graphic work has received several international awards and his photographs have been shown and exhibited in various galleries, photo forums and at Art in 1984 and 1985. His posters, for which he has repeatedly received the reddot award, up to the Best of the Best , are represented in the collection of the new Pinakothek in Munich and in the ZHdK poster collection. As a publisher, he realized the much-acclaimed photo book about the Höflinger photographer dynasty in Basel. Further book projects followed, which were also awarded the reddot award for design.

In 2006 he started another activity as a filmmaker. In addition to an image film about the Rapperswil brickworks (Bern), which shows how the brick and roof tile are made from the pit to the finished product, he made a documentary film about the city of Sanaa in Yemen . Other film projects such as B. over the south of Tuscany followed. In addition to his active work as a graphic designer, he teaches communication at the IBZ technical college in Aarau.

From 1983 to 1986 Schmid headed the “Zur Stockeregg” photo gallery in Zurich . Under his leadership, the gallery developed into a small center for contemporary photography in Switzerland. In addition to exhibitions, he also gave lectures on the history of photography. As a curator, it was also important to him to bring lesser-known photographic talents to light and thus promote the understanding of photography in Switzerland. In 1984, for example, he organized an exhibition with pictures by the young landscape photographer Peter Gasser. His pictures were in the tradition of the American photographer Ansel Adams, a proponent of straight photography, which emphasized the qualities inherent in photography, such as depth of field, and thus consciously opposed the painterly claims of pictorialism. After that, UBS (formerly SBG) hired him as head of department for cultural events. During this time he realized the redesign of the “Great Photo Prize of Switzerland”, curated various exhibitions with the competition photographs and edited the exhibition catalog of the same name. He designed the “Pictorialism in Photography” exhibition for Credit Suisse and edited the accompanying photo book of the same name.

Before, during and after his time as a curator at the “Zur Stockeregg” gallery in Zurich, Schmid built up his own extensive photo collection, which he donated to the Swiss Photo Foundation in 2010. There it was recorded and published in the collective archive under Hanns Schmid's special collection.
