The Apache Software Foundation [ əˈpætʃi ˈsɒftweə (ɹ) faʊnˈdeɪʃən ] ( ASF ) is a voluntary organization that promotes Apache software projects, including the Apache web server . The ASF emerged in June 1999 from the Apache Group and was founded in Delaware (USA), the seat is in Wakefield (Massachusetts) .

It is a distributed shared by developers of open source - software projects work. Characteristic for Apache projects is the collaborative and discussion-friendly development process and the open and pragmatic Apache license , which can also be used and adapted by external open source projects. Each project is led by a selected team of experts. They also actively participate in the development of the projects. The ASF is a meritocracy whose membership is only granted to active developers and contributors to the Apache projects.

The tasks of the ASF include the legal protection of all project employees and the protection of the “Apache” brand. The logo of the Apache Software Foundation is the colorful feather that adorns most of the Apache projects. The name was chosen out of respect for the North American Indian tribe of the Apaches .

As of June 25, 2019, the ASF has 872 members. The current president is Sam Ruby .

Projects

Apache divides its software development activities into separate, semi-autonomous areas called "top-level projects" (formally referred to in the bylaws as the "project management committee"), some of which have a number of sub-projects. Unlike some other organizations that host FOSS projects, a project must be licensed to the ASF with a grant or contributor agreement before it is hosted by Apache. In this way, ARSP has the intellectual property rights it needs to develop and disseminate all of its projects.
