biography

Behlendorf grew up in southern California near the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA , and was interested in the development of the Internet in its early stage, while in the early 1990s in Berkeley studied. In 1993 Behlendorf founded Organic Inc. together with Jonathan Nelson, which was the first to create commercial websites. While developing the first for-profit web presence for HotWired in 1994 , they noticed that the most widely used web server at the time, NCSA httpd (which was developed by the NCSA at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ), allows a user login, as it was requested by the client, could not realize. For this reason , Behlendorf patched the web server for the HotWired project, i. i.e., he changed the source code .

But Behlendorf was not the only one who was busy patching the NCSA source code at the time, and so he set up a mailing list together with Cliff Skolnick to coordinate the work of the various programmers. In late February 1995, the Apache Group was founded by eight of the original developers. While they worked together casually, they rewrote all of the code, and that was how the first Apache HTTP Server came out. In 1999 the Apache Group became the Apache Software Foundation .

He then was CTO at CollabNet , which he founded in 1999 together with O'Reilly & Associates .

Today Behlendorf heads the Hyperledger project of the Linux Foundation . He is also a board member of the Mozilla Foundation .
