The Zurich Canton Police is the police force for the Canton of Zurich . It was founded in 1804 as the «Landjäger-Corps des Kantons Zürich», a reaction to the buck war . In 1901 the Zurich canton police created Switzerland's first crime museum .

Around 3,800 people are employed, of which 2,346 were members of the police force as of December 2016, of which 439 were women. Communications department

Prevention department

The prevention department ensures that dangers are identified and reduced with foresight, has preventive influence on children and young people and maintains an exchange with population groups from other cultures. It consists of the services for protection against violence, instruction for children and young people, analysis / projects, youth intervention, the “bridge builder” department and the intervention center against domestic violence.

Command area 1

Command area 1 is a main staff department of the cantonal police and deals with training, industrial and police psychology, human resources, preventive tasks and the area of ​​law.

The tasks of the command area 1 include:

  • Training is the central service point for the overall organization of basic and advanced training.
  • Industrial and police psychology advises the command on personnel and management selection, trains employees in psychological matters, supports them in the event of professional and personal difficulties and ensures initial support for emergency services and those affected in the event of stressful events.
  • The personnel department is responsible for all personnel matters, in particular for the recruitment of new employees and personnel administration.
  • The legal department is responsible for legal issues and carries out administrative and complaint procedures.

Command area 2

Command area 2 is one of the two central organizational units of the Zurich canton police. It provides the entire organization with professional services with the departments "Finance / Controlling / Management", "Logistics", "IT Innovation", "IT Operations" and the "Forensic Institute Zurich FOR".

The tasks of the command area 2 include:

  • Coordination of overall company financial planning and financial control

Criminal police

The criminal police tasks include the prevention of criminal acts, the determination of criminal offenses and their investigation in accordance with the StPO (§ 8 Police Organization Act).

As an actual core task, the criminal police fulfills the tasks associated with preliminary investigations under police law and preliminary criminal proceedings (Section 4 Police Act; Police Act). It applies the measures provided for in the Police Act to check information about possible offenses, to identify crimes committed or, where possible, to prevent crimes. With independent investigative procedures or after the opening of criminal investigations in cooperation with the public prosecutor's office, she handles all cases of moderate to complex crime that cannot be dealt with by the basic services. When investigating criminal offenses, the criminal police cover a wide range of offenses. These include capital crimes such as homicide, robbery, serious bodily harm and arson, but also human trafficking and sexual offenses. Another focus is economic and other property and property offenses, but also drug offenses with special consideration of structural crime, in which the perpetrator is active with a considerable degree of organization. But she also works on other phenomena such as social security fraud and various forms of cybercrime.

The criminal investigation department creates the basis for an effective fight against crime. This includes the ongoing analysis of the crime situation, the proactive discovery of possible criminal offenses and the targeted search for perpetrators, but also the efficient and effective gathering of evidence when investigating criminal matters. The use of the most modern electronic, information and communication technologies for crime prevention and investigation complements the demanding tasks of the criminal police. In addition to the cooperation with the other law enforcement authorities, it is also important to work closely with forensic and forensic specialists who can use scientific methods and technical aids to make even the smallest of traces visible and evaluate them. In addition, the intuition of the criminologists, their tactical skills and their ability to draw the right conclusions from information and evidence are often decisive for success.

Security police

The security police are responsible for special care in the area of ​​security. This includes interventions by special units, personal protection tasks, deployments in the unpeaceful security service, general monitoring and security tasks as well as ensuring management support within the framework of the cantonal management organization (KFO). She also runs the police prison, trains police dogs, tracks down environmental offenders, controls the arms trade, punishes violations of trade secrets and procures information on internal security on behalf of the federal government.

Traffic police

From an organizational point of view, the traffic police is a main department whose chief executive is a member of the cantonal police. It comprises three departments with a total of around 200 employees.

On the one hand, the traffic police support the regional police's trains in carrying out basic traffic police services throughout the canton (excluding the cities of Zurich and Winterthur) and are responsible for all training and equipment issues in the specialist area. On the other hand, the traffic police are also the entire operational hub for traffic control, traffic monitoring and accident recording and analysis. These tasks are carried out by specialized offices such as the maritime police, the traffic control center, the accident photo service or the traffic buses.

Airport police

The airport police is a main department of the Zurich cantonal police and takes on all police tasks at the airport , i.e. criminal, traffic, security and border police. An armored emergency vehicle, a Mowag Eagle IV , is available to the airport police to carry out these tasks .

The airport police

Regional police

The regional police, as the actual front-line police, provide around 680 police officers around the clock for the population of the Canton of Zurich.
