Nico Semsrott (born March 11, 1986 in Hamburg ) is a German cabaret artist , satirist , politician ( Die PARTTEI ) and slam poet . He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2019 .

Life

During his school days at the Sophie-Barat-Schule in Hamburg , he was part of the editorial team of the school newspaper Sophies Welt , which, however, was censored by a counseling teacher . After a dispute with the school management, he and his younger brother, today's journalist Arne Semsrott , founded the newspaper Sophies Unterwelt , whose sale on the school premises was banned by the school management. After graduating from high school, he completed a voluntary social year in culture at the Junge Presse Hamburg . He then sued the University of Hamburg to study sociology and history , but dropped out again after six weeks.

Nico Semsrott has appeared as a depressive fictional character on poetry slams , cabaret stages and on television since 2007 . He usually introduces himself to the audience as a “demotivational trainer”. This was also a profession on the ballot for the 2019 European elections . His first solo program entitled Joy is just a lack of information premiered on June 14, 2012 in Hamburg. Since autumn 2014 Semsrott has been on tour with a constantly updated version of the program, with the title being supplemented by " Update " and a version number that is increased by 0.5 each year. Since 2019 he has been on a break due to his political involvement. From 2017 to 2019 he was part of the ZDF- heute-show team .

politics

Nico Semsrott headed the Berlin state list of the party Die PARTTEI as the top candidate for the 2017 federal election , which received 2.1% of the vote.

In the 2019 European elections , he ran for Die PARTTEI in second place behind Martin Sonneborn . In the election campaign, he often criticized the poor confrontation between older politicians and younger generations, as they were less important. In a satirical campaign, he demanded a “maximum voting age”. In the election on May 26, 2019, Die PARTTEI in Germany received 2.4% of the votes. With this, Semsrott won a mandate in the European Parliament alongside Sonneborn . While Sonneborn decided, as in the previous legislature, to remain non-attached, Semsrott announced that he would join the group The Greens / European Free Alliance . For his group he is a member of the Budgetary Control Committee and the Petitions Committee .

A series of thefts in the EU Parliament during the time of the coronavirus pandemic became known through Semsrott. His YouTube video, in which he discussed the theft and the inaction of the security service, met with international resonance.
