Sophie's underworld

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sophie's underworld was the name of a school newspaper from Nico and Arne Semsrott and other students from the Sophie Barat School in Hamburg , which was banned by the school management and was founded as a counter-newspaper to the official newspaper Sophies Welt .

The dispute over the newspaper caused a stir in the 2004/2005 school year. The editors of the paper founded at the beginning of the school year refused to accept the requirements of the school administration for recognition and to accept a counseling teacher . The editors saw these conditions as a threat of censorship and risked an argument.

As a result, the sale of Sophie's underworld on the school grounds was banned, but the editors sold their paper from a DIXI toilet in front of the private school . They reached the 1st place of the grammar schools in the school newspaper competition of the Federal President for Hamburg. In autumn 2005, the school committee of the Hamburg city council discussed whether private students could sell their school newspaper on the school premises without censorship. For constitutional reasons, however, the right of the school board to determine the distribution of press products on its premises was confirmed.

In January 2006, the newspaper's editors received the Bertini Prize for Young People with Civil Courage in recognition of their commitment to freedom of the press . The editorial team donated 100 percent of the prize money of 1,250 euros to Reporters Without Borders eV There were three editions of the newspaper.
