Gunzoburg in Überlingen

The Gunzoburg is a medieval patrician house in the Baden-Württemberg city of Überlingen on Lake Constance . An inscription at the entrance says that this house is said to have been the residence of Duke Gunzo , Duke of Swabia and Alemannia , in 641 .

"Gunzo, Duke of Swabia and Alemannia, resided in this castle in 641."

However, the following speaks against the claim:

  1. The house does not date from the 7th century, as the inscription suggests, but from the 13th or 14th century at the earliest.
  2. Independent dukes of Alemannia have not existed since the 6th century, dukes of Swabia since the 9th century at the earliest, so the title is ambiguous.
  3. Gunzo can also not be clearly identified among the dukes of the 7th century (who were dependent on the disintegrated Franconian central power).

Today the Gunzoburg houses a gallery.
