Martin Shaw (born January 21, 1945 in Birmingham ) is a British actor . He became known in Germany through the British crime television series Die Profis (The Professionals) in the role of CI5 agent Ray Doyle, whom he played from 1977 to 1983.

Life

Shaw studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art . After graduation, he quickly got on stage, including in Look Back in Anger ( Look Back in Anger ) and A Streetcar Named Desire ( A Streetcar Named Desire ). He had his first major role on television as a hippie student Robert Croft in the British television series Coronation Street .

Shaw played the role of Banquo in Roman Polański's Macbeth film in 1971 .

From 1977 to 1983 he played with Ray Doyle one of the main characters in the series Die Profis ( The Professionals ), which made him famous worldwide. The producers actually wanted to engage Anthony Andrews for the role of Willam Bodie , but he didn't get along with Shaw. For this reason Lewis Collins was chosen because he got along very well with Shaw and at the same time was a completely different character. These different character traits were incorporated accordingly into the dialogues in the series. In each episode there are various dialogues that only Collins and Shaw have together, mostly in the car. Shaw therefore let his hair grow long, contrary to the script, and appeared more in the “rotten look”, while Collins, on the other hand, had a short haircut and mostly in tailored suits or designer clothes. At the same time, attempts have always been made to point out that Shaw is the more intellectual of the two. Shaw actually didn't like his role as a violent cop and pushed back to the theater early on, so the series ended after four seasons.

After the series was over, he initially concentrated more on the theater and played Elvis Presley in the play Are You Lonesome Tonight? . He also returned to the television screen in the 1990s, e.g. B. in The Chief , Rhodes (as Cecil Rhodes , together with his son Joe as the young Cecil Rhodes) or Always and Everyone .

He later played Commander Adam Dalgliesh in the BBC film adaptations of two PD James novels , Death in Holy Orders and The Murder Room .

From autumn 2005, Martin Shaw appeared on stage for the first time in years as Sir Thomas More in A Man for All Seasons by Robert Bolt , together with his daughter Sophie, who plays More's daughter Margaret. The West End premiere took place on January 3, 2006 at London's Theater Royal Haymarket. The play was on the program up to and including April 2006.

In 2006 and 2007, Martin Shaw returned as the title character to British television with seasons 5 and 6 of the popular judicial series Judge John Deed .

Martin Shaw has appeared in the BBC series George Gently - The Unbribable ( Inspector George Gently ) since 2007 . The series takes place in the mid-1960s and had its German premiere in 2009 on ZDF.

In addition to acting for film and theater, he has also worked on various audio books, including works by Thomas Hardy , Oscar Wilde , Ken Follett and JRR Tolkien .

Martin Shaw married four times and got divorced three times. From his first marriage to Jill Allen, he has three children (Luke, Joe and Sophie) who have also taken up acting. He is also divorced from his third wife Vicky Kimm and has been married to his fourth wife Karen De Silva since 2003.
