Hugh Griffith

Hugh Emrys Griffith (born May 30, 1912 in Anglesey , Wales , † May 14, 1980 in London ) was a Welsh film and theater actor .

Griffith made a name for himself as a London theater actor in the early 1940s. He later became internationally known through various roles in English and US cinema productions in the 1950s and 1960s. The Welshman, who had very distinctive facial features, appeared in the various genres. In 1959 he played the role of Sheikh Ilderim in the classic monumental film Ben Hur , for which he received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. In 1964 he was nominated again for an Oscar for his role in Tom Jones - Between Bed and Gallows . Griffith was married to Adelgunde Margaret Beatrice von Dechend (1911-1983), a granddaughter of the Prussian banker Hermann von Dechend .
