Sensation on page 1 (Original title: The Story on Page One ) is an American film drama with Rita Hayworth from 1959, which was also directed by the screenwriter Clifford Odets .

Josephine "Jo" Morris and Larry Ellis are charged with killing officer Mike Morris, Jo's husband. Jo's mother, Hattie, visits the young lawyer Victor Santini and asks him to defend her daughter in court. Santini is reluctant to take on the case, however. During his first interview with Jo, she told him her story: Her husband Mike was an aggressive drinker who could not contain his anger even with his ten-year-old daughter Avis. Out of frustration and loneliness, Jo moved to the sensitive widower Larry Ellis, with whom she soon fell in love. When Jo, Mike, and Avis returned from a family reunion one evening, Larry was waiting at their house to speak to Jo. After both Avis and Mike went to bed, Jo called Larry into the kitchen. But Mike heard a noise, became suspicious and went to the kitchen with his service weapon in hand, where he wanted to hunt down his rival. In the scuffle that followed, a shot went off and Mike fell to the ground, fatally hit.

The prosecutor meanwhile has a perfect murder theory ready: Mike stood in the way of the two lovers and should therefore give his life. While Larry had got himself a safe alibi for the evening , Jo would have made her husband drunk at the party, only to receive Larry unnoticed in her house afterwards, to give him the gun and to lure the unloved husband into the line of fire with cries for help. As a clear indication of his theory of the course of events, the public prosecutor points out a high level of life insurance that the man killed had taken out shortly before his death.

Lawyer Santini can refute the statements of all witnesses against his client , but Larry's alleged alibi seems to be an unbeatable trump card of the prosecution. To fight this, Santini must break resistance from Larry's defense attorney, who is paid by Larry's possessive mother. From the beginning she was against her son's relationship with Jo. Your questioning in court will ultimately be the crucial turning point in the process . In cross-examination, Santini reveals the true nature of Mrs. Ellis: She is vicious, mean, selfish and domineering. Larry had to protect himself and Jo from her with the alibi, of which the twelve jurors are ultimately firmly convinced. With the verdict “not guilty”, Larry and Jo can finally look forward to a future together with good cheer.

After None But the Lonely Heart (1944) with Cary Grant , Sensation on page 1 was the second and last directorial work by the American screenwriter Clifford Odets. When he wrote the script for Sensation on page 1 , he had Rita Hayworth in mind for the female lead from the start. He told columnist Louella Parsons that he "couldn't imagine anyone else to star."

In December 1959, Sensation was first shown in US cinemas on page 1 . The German premiere followed on February 26, 1960.

"A circumstantial trial based on conventional American court films with some gripping court scenes and speeches," was the lexicon of international films . Paul V. Beckley wrote in the New York Herald Tribune that in Sensation on page 1 , Rita Hayworth was taking "a great step forward from mere glamor to serious and individual performance." According to Time , Hayworth, "the former pinup girl", showed in the film that she has now "dominated the role of the depressed woman". When she's in front of the camera, she “keeps the film in shape”. If it is not, "the tension in sentimental delicacies" dissolves. According to Daily Variety , "the entire cast" was "outshone by the idea of ​​Katherine Squire as Hayworth's mother." Squire achieved "an intensity and credibility that won't leave you indifferent when watching".

All Movie Guide's Craig Butler said in retrospect that Sensation on page 1 could have been "a better movie", "maybe even better if Clifford Odets had been happy just writing the script." Odets is "anything but a born director". The film suffers "from its cumbersome way of staging the admittedly complicated scenes". The "biggest problem", however, is Anthony Franciosa's idea. He is "never really convincing" in his role. Gig Young is "better", but not always. Only Rita Hayworth delivered "a consistently impressive, structured and cohesive performance among the main actors". "Freed from her glamor image, she plays her part like a well-tuned violin," says Butler.
