Anthony Franciosa

Anthony Franciosa (born October 25, 1928 in New York City , New York - † January 19, 2006 in Los Angeles , California ; actually Anthony Papaleo ) was an American actor .

Life

Anthony Franciosa played briefly in a youth theater when he was 18. Further engagements at off-Broadway theaters followed , whereupon he received an acting scholarship. Erwin Piscator gave him his first engagement at a theater. Franciosa appeared in numerous plays and received favorable reviews.

Elia Kazan gave him his first role in 1957 in the film A Face in the Crowd , George Cukor and Fred Zinnemann gave the now experienced theater actor further engagements. Franciosa received an Oscar nomination for his role in Poisonous Snow , which he had previously embodied with great success on stage . For many are called ( Career , 1959) he received the Golden Globe Award for best actor. Another nomination for the Golden Globe received Franciosa in 1964 for the Western Rio Conchos .

Franciosa's career was hampered by his choleric temper. In the mid-1970s, he appeared on television in the short-lived crime series as secret agent Matt Helm , a role with which his co-star in Career , Dean Martin , had been successful in several films ten years earlier. Franciosa's last film was City Hall in 1996 , with Al Pacino .

Anthony Franciosa was married four times, from 1952 to 1957 to the author Beatrice Bakalyar, from 1957 to 1960 to the film actress Shelley Winters and from 1961 to 1967 to the real estate agent Judy Kanter, a friend and bridesmaid of Grace Kelly . With Judy Kanter, Franciosa had a daughter, Nina. Since 1970 Franciosa was married to the former German photo model Rita Thiel. From this marriage there are two sons, Christopher and Marco.

Anthony Franciosa suffered a stroke on January 16, 2006 , from which he died three days later. His former wife, Shelley Winters, had died of a heart attack on January 14th .
