The Long Hot Summer is an American drama from 1958 directed by Martin Ritt . The script blends three stories by William Faulkner into one plot: the novel Spotted Horses (1931), the short story Barn Burning (1939) and the novel The Hamlet (1940).

action

Ben Quick is charged with arson in his home village . Although this cannot be proven in court, he is expelled from the city. From then on, Ben moved through the southern states as a tramp when two women from Mississippi took him to their home village by car: it was Clara Varner and her sister-in-law Eula. Clara's father is the wealthy but tyrannical plantation owner Will Varner, who owns much of the town. Will Varner is in the hospital, but his son Jody gives Ben a job as a harvest worker on the farm. When Will Varner returns from the hospital, he believes that he recognizes himself as a young man in the ambitious and uncompromising Ben. On the other hand, Will thinks little of his son Jody, who is considered effeminate by him. So from now on, Will tries to pair Ben and Clara together. He even wants to “convince” Ben with the help of his fortune and promises him the inheritance. But Clara is fascinated, but also repelled by Ben. In addition, she already has a long-time admirer in the form of local Alan Stewart. Ben still woos her harder and harder, but she doesn't want to marry without love.

When Ben rises up in the Varner family's company through the successful sale of wild horses and is finally allowed to live with them in the house, Jody feels increasingly threatened in his position as corporate heir. Jody even tries to shoot his rival Ben at one point. In anger at his father, Jody locks him up in a stable and sets a fire, but he can't get through this parricide and saves Will from the stable. This leads to a reconciliation between father and son. Meanwhile, Ben is suspected of arson by the villagers. During these suspicions, Ben and Clara get closer because he tells her about his childhood, when his father was an arsonist and that he himself was suspected of arson just because of his origins. Father Will depicts the fire in the hall as an accident caused by his cigar. Ben wants to leave town, but Clara has taken a liking to him too, as she confesses to him. He therefore stays with the Varner family.

backgrounds

The film was shot in the small town of Clinton , Louisiana , in addition to scenes shot in the studio . The cast consisted mainly of members of the Actors Studio in New York, including lead actor Paul Newman, who was still at the beginning of his Hollywood career. He and his film partner Joanne Woodward married after filming ended in January 1958.

The theme song The Long Hot Summer was sung by Jimmie Rodgers . Martin Ritt , who was still inexperienced as a film director and had previously had to work at the theater because he was blacklisted during the McCarthy era because of alleged proximity to communism , was hired to direct the film . Orson Welles was hired as Will at Ritt's express request, although the 20th Century producers were critical of Fox Welles, fearing his temperament and interference. On the film set there were several arguments between Ritt and Welles because they interpreted the role of Will differently and Welles wanted to interfere in other aspects of the film. Ultimately, however, both overcame their differences.

Based on this film, the television series The Long, Hot Summer with Edmond O'Brien , Roy Thinnes and Nancy Malone in the leading roles was created between 1965 and 1966 . Also in 1985 was another remake of a television film with Jason Robards , Don Johnson and Cybill Shepherd .
