Irving Ravetch

Irving Dover Ravetch (born November 14, 1920 in Newark , New Jersey , † September 19, 2010 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American screenwriter .

Life

Ravetch studied literature at the University of California, Los Angeles and worked there in theater productions. He then took a course for young screenwriters at MGM Studios . He met his future wife and colleague Harriet Frank Jr. , whom he married in 1946. The following year he wrote his first film script for Living in a big way , which was followed by about twenty more by the late 1980s. He worked particularly often with the director Martin Ritt , whom he had also suggested for the film adaptation of The Long Hot Summer ; Ravetch had reworked the novel into a script together with William Faulkner .

Ravetch and Frank were nominated for an Oscar for The Wildest Among Thousand ; they have received the New York Film Critics Circle Award and the Writers Guild of America Award . They were nominated again for Norma Rae in 1980; even at the Golden Globes , however, there was still one nomination.

In addition to his film work, Ravetch also wrote repeatedly plays that were performed on Broadway .
