content

Captain Wade Hunnicutt, a wealthy and influential citizen and farmer in an eastern Texas town , has a 17-year-old son, Theron Hunnicutt, with his wife, Hannah. In the course of the film it emerges that he also has the somewhat older illegitimate son Raphael "Rafe" Copeley, who comes from an affair with a migrant worker who has since died. Although he lets him live and work on his property, he does not recognize him as a legal son.

Hunnicutt is a notorious womanizer , at the beginning of the story he is shot by a jealous husband. His wife has been estranged from him for a long time, but continues to live with him under the same roof, on condition that she may take care of Theron's upbringing. Hannah Hunnicutt raised her son to be independent, but when he comes of age her husband insists that Theron's upbringing be taken over. Under the watchful eye of Rafe Copeley, who works for Hunnicutt, Theron is introduced to the hunt and other masculinity rituals .

Theron's "new" way of life leads to a love affair with a girl from a good family, Elizabeth "Libby" Halstead, and it is through her that he learns of his father's bad reputation in the city. As a result, Theron is unable to marry his great love Libby due to his parents' dysfunctional relationship.

The vicious cycle seems to repeat itself when Libby also gives birth to an illegitimate son - Theron's. Rafe Copeley marries the desperate Libby, who sees her as an honest woman, and poses as the child's father. Libby's father, Albert Halstead, however, believes the talk in town that Wade Hunnicutt impregnated and humiliated his daughter. In a rage, he drives to Wade's property and murders him.

Theron pursues the fleeing murderer and shoots him in self-defense. Theron then decides to look for happiness in a foreign country and leaves the city. The roles of the unequal brothers have now been reversed: the illegitimate son Rafe leads the civil existence that was actually intended for the ancestral owner Theron.
