The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is a film by Vincente Minnelli from 1962 based on the novel The Horsemen of the Apocalypse ( Los cuatro Jinetes de Apocalipsis ) by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez . The wealthy landowner Madariaga ( Lee J. Cobb ) invites his relatives living in Germany and France to a festival to demonstrate family cohesion. But when the Germans occupied Paris in 1941, the family fell apart. Glenn Ford , Ingrid Thulin , Charles Boyer and Yvette Mimieux play the leading roles.
The film is a remake of the silent film The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse from 1921 with Rudolph Valentino .

After a boisterous fiesta, the wealthy landowner Madariaga is flown home in a small plane by his favorite grandson Julio Desnoyers. There is a meeting of the two branches of the family. One daughter of Madariaga married a French and the other a German. In a truly apocalyptic scene, Madariaga dies of a heart attack after learning that his grandson Heinrich has become a Nazi .
Both families have left Argentina. Julio Desnoyers lives as a playboy in Paris. He leads a carefree life until the Germans occupy Paris. His sister Chi-Chi fights in the Resistance , while he is completely apolitical. The German part of the family has now also arrived in Paris. However, as an occupier. Karl von Hartrott is the city commander and can help them with some difficulties because of old family ties. Julio falls in love with Marguerite Laurier, the wife of a newspaper publisher. Marguerite is torn between loving him and trying to stand by her husband. Chi-Chi died after torture in a Gestapo - prison . The publisher Etienne Laurier is also tortured to death. Julio is now also a member of the Resistance. He gets a special assignment in which he deals directly with his cousin Heinrich. Both die in the hail of bombs from the Allied troops, which Julio has shown the way through a tracking transmitter.

Originally, Minnelli wanted Alain Delon and Romy Schneider to star. Schneider canceled, however, and the producers insisted on an American star for the male lead.
Since Ingrid Thulin's English pronunciation was not yet good enough to be understood by the American audience at the time, it was dubbed by Angela Lansbury .
