John Gay (born April 1, 1924 in Whittier , California - † February 4, 2017 in Santa Monica , California) was an American screenwriter .

Career

John Gay's screenwriting career began in 1949 on the television series Apartment 3-C . He and Terence Rattigan received a nomination in the " Best Adapted Screenplay " category at the 1959 Academy Awards for their artistic performance on Separate from Table and Bed . The award went to Alan Jay Lerner for the film Gigi .

He wrote other scripts for the films U 23 - Tödliche Tiefen , Rendezvous in Madrid , That Was the Wild West , Mutiny on the Bounty with Marlon Brando , Forty Cars Westward with Burt Lancaster , The Last Safari , The Lullaby of Manslaughter and You want to be giants by Paul Newman . At the 1985 Primetime Emmy Awards, he received a nomination for his work on Fatal Vision in 1984. He retired from the film business in the late 1990s and died in 2017 at the age of 92.
