Nuts ... Crazy (original title: Nuts ) is a film drama by Martin Ritt from 1987, in which Barbra Streisand plays the leading role. The script is based on the play Nuts by Tom Topor .

action

The divorced Claudia Draper works as a luxury call girl . There is a quarrel with her suitor Allen Green because he demands to bathe her, which she categorically refuses. When he becomes violent, she kills him with a shard of the mirror he broke. She is charged with murder. Her mother and stepfather are keen to see her declared insane.

So the court hears whether Claudia is sane, since her unconventional lifestyle and her flippant manner are viewed by her conservative environment as a mental disorder. She wants to be considered fully sane and throws the star lawyer hired by her parents to the ground, who has had an opinion drawn up contrary to her sense. The star attorney then refuses to defend her; the public defender Aaron Levinsky is to take over the case. When Claudia realizes that he is on her side, she begins to cooperate with him.

Claudia will be placed under psychiatric observation for the next few days. At the next court hearing, at which the appraiser is supposed to give his assessment, Levinsky confronts the stepfather and it turns out that he sexually abused her as a child. He bathed her and in the process offended her, which explains her aversion to the wishes of the customer she killed.

Claudia is declared sane and acquitted a few weeks later for self-defense.

Reviews

Roger Ebert praised the play by Barbra Streisand in the Chicago Sun-Times of November 20, 1987, but criticized the direction by Martin Ritt.

The television magazine Prisma wrote: “Martin Ritt does not limit himself to the usual genre set pieces in his exciting court film. The viewer does not have to do without the typical lousy interrogation tricks, but Ritt is also primarily concerned with the reconstruction of a life story. Barbra Streisand's play, which is well worth seeing, condenses the character of the main character into an accusation against double standards and psychiatry. "

The lexicon of international films does not find the story very original, but believes that “the careful direction and excellent actors” arouse interest and “make the human fates visible, not least in the supporting roles”.

  • In 1988 the film was nominated for a Golden Globe in the categories of "Best Drama", "Best Actor" (Richard Dreyfuss) and "Best Actress" (Barbra Streisand) .
